Discover Borrello: Nature and History
Accommodation in Borrello
When planning a trip to Borrello, you can distinguish between two interests: the natural features of the Cascate del Verde and the town’s buildings and historic remains. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can consider which focus you want to shape your trip. The waterfall landscape, plant life and local history offer specific starting points.
Waterfall landscape and natural environment
The Cascate del Verde are a natural monument with three cascades, each more than 200 metres high. The area is defined by steep rock faces covered with vegetation-rich habitats. The cascades and the rock faces offer different points of interest: the height of the waterfalls on the one hand, and the character of the surrounding landscape on the other.
More than 30 wild orchid species have been recorded in the garrigue and pastures of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Cascate del Verde. Silver fir (Abies alba) and holm oak (Quercus ilex) also occur together in the Riserva. These details about the plants offer a different perspective on nature than the waterfalls and rock faces, directing attention to the habitats and the species found there.
The area is designated as a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network. Its designation is “Abetina di Rosello e cascate del Rio Verde”. This protected status complements the specific landscape and plant features with a formal classification.
A second viewpoint also offers a view of the Cascate del Verde. It is higher up and easier to access on foot. If you’re weighing up viewpoints by elevation and ease of access, these are two specific features of this spot.
Local history through buildings and relics
On the edge of Borrello’s historic centre, above the Ripi cliffs and overlooking the Sangro Valley, stands the old Chiesa di Sant’Egidio. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. This eventful building history offers a distinct way to explore local history.
The Chiesa has a late Baroque limestone portal decorated with an image of the Madonna. The church’s longer history can thus be considered alongside a specific architectural feature: the portal’s material, its style and the image.
A small section of the ancient Portasaracina is still visible in Borrello; some remains of the medieval castle can also be seen. These relics point to different historical periods. Together with the church, which has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, they offer various starting points for anyone interested in local history.
A description of the nature reserve, last updated in 2021, places the Museo della civiltĂ contadina on the ground floor of Borrello town hall. Check current visiting arrangements before you go.
More perspectives for planning your trip
A regional tourism website, last updated on 23 May 2023, mentions walks through the forest and the town with a donkey cared for by a local association. Check in advance whether these walks are currently available. Alongside nature observation and local history, walks are therefore another distinct aspect to consider when planning your trip.
