Paglieta lies on a hill 235 metres above sea level, south of the Sangro River, and offers panoramic views across the Sangro Valley. The town’s history, churches dating from different centuries and connections to rural culture give it a multifaceted character. The landscape and regional cuisine are also among the topics you may wish to consider when planning your trip.

Walls and Towers

In 1200, the medieval settlement of Paglieta was enclosed by imposing walls. The Torrione Medievale dates from the 14th century and was part of the old wall circuit. The Torre della Porta offers a different architectural feature: it is built entirely of brick. These allow you to distinguish two different aspects of the town’s medieval history—the role of the Torrione within the fortifications and the building material of the Torre della Porta.

Churches Dating from Different Centuries

The Chiesa di San Canziano dates from the 12th century; the Chiesa di San Rocco was built in the 16th century. The history of the Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo also reaches back to the 16th century, when it was originally founded. The present building was constructed between 1807 and 1841 on the site of an old chapel. It has three naves separated by pillars. For this church, then, the founding date and the construction period of the present building are far apart—a useful distinction when interpreting Paglieta’s different historical layers.

Landscape and Cultural Heritage

The hilltop location south of the Sangro offers panoramic views across the valley. The area’s cultural heritage also includes traces of a Roman bridge. Traces of a Tratturo route have been preserved at Cansano–Colle Limite; the place name thus refers to another specific connection with Paglieta’s cultural landscape.

The Museum of Folk Traditions and Rural Culture houses a collection of typical artefacts from the Sangro Valley. These include everyday objects, tools, traditional costumes and documentation of folk singing. The collection thus brings together objects from daily life and work with clothing and musical heritage. Visitors interested in the region’s everyday life and cultural history will find several different themes represented in one collection.

Events and Regional Cuisine

The Passeggiata Ecologica was organised by the Pro Loco di Paglieta as a traditional event and reached its 17th edition in 2026. The 2025 edition also included Walking Yoga in its programme. Aspettando Sentieri was also organised by the Pro Loco as a traditional event in 2025, reaching its sixth edition. These details refer to specific past editions and illustrate different event connections: the Passeggiata Ecologica, whose 2025 programme included Walking Yoga, and Aspettando Sentieri.

The regional culinary tradition includes the wines Montepulciano, Cerasuolo and Trebbiano, which are paired in Paglieta with Maccheroni alla chitarra. These are square-cut spaghetti served with a ragù made from a combination of beef, pork or lamb.

The Cantina Sociale di Paglieta was founded in 1970 and offers quality wines to the public. Its specific selection may change, so check what is currently available in advance if you are interested. Together with its historic buildings, the museum collection and its connections to the landscape, this presents a broad picture of Paglieta that extends beyond the town’s medieval history.
