Schiavi di Abruzzo: Archaeology, Local History and Monte Pizzuto
Accommodation in Schiavi di Abruzzo
In Schiavi di Abruzzo, archaeological heritage meets local history and mountain scenery. The Templi Italici offer visible evidence of ancient history; the Museo Archeologico Schiavi di Abruzzo (MASDA) focuses on finds and research relating to the Area Sacra. The medieval town centre and Chiesa San Maurizio Martire reveal further traces of the past. Monte Pizzuto adds a scenic highlight.
Archaeological Traces and a Mountain Route
The smaller temple of the Templi Italici is dated to 90–88 BC. Burials dating from the 11th century BC to the 4th century AD were discovered in the necropolis near the Area Sacra. These dates refer to different archaeological evidence: the dating of a temple and the time span of the burials. MASDA presents an overview of finds and research relating to the Area Sacra. Its visitor route draws attention to the area’s architectural design, as well as to the burial rites and funerals of the Samnite population.
The Templi Italici–Monte Pizzuto cycling and walking route starts at the archaeological site, leads to the Museo Archeologico in town, and continues to the summit of Monte Pizzuto at an elevation of 1,290 m. The municipal route description, last updated on 15 May 2024, also mentions previously unused paths that have been reopened, as well as signposts and information boards that have been installed. The named stops thus lead from the archaeological site to the museum in town and on to the mountain destination.
At Monte Pizzuto, a panoramic walk offers 360° views: from the Monti Simbruini and the Monti della Meta across the Monti del Matese and the Maiella to the Adriatic Sea and the Tremiti Islands. This brings together different ways to explore Schiavi di Abruzzo: archaeological finds, the museum’s themes, a route to the summit, and far-reaching views across the landscape.
Church and Local History
Chiesa San Maurizio Martire combines a long history of construction with remarkable works of art. It was built around the middle of the 16th century and completely rebuilt and enlarged between 1856 and 1866. During this renovation, it was given three naves and eight altars. The works mentioned include the altarpiece “Anime del Purgatorio” by Giuseppe Lallo of Castiglione and a painting of the Madonna del Carmine, created by muleteers from Agnone. The church thus reveals both its early construction date and the extensive changes made in the 19th century.
The medieval historic centre preserves visible traces of a fortified settlement. The upper quarter includes the area known as “Castello”; the Museo Archeologico di Schiavi D’Abruzzo is located in the historic centre. Local cuisine also adds to the area’s historical themes: Pallott casc'e ova is a typical speciality of the southern Abruzzo region.
