Scerni can be explored on two scales: the town center, with its historic and cultural buildings, and the larger, hilly municipal area. The town center is located along the crest of a gentle hill, at about 276 meters above sea level. The area covers around 4,100 hectares and is predominantly used for agriculture. The elevation refers to the town center; the area and land use describe the wider landscape. This makes it possible to understand the specific location and rural character as two distinct aspects of the destination.

Churches and sacred art

The parish church of San Panfilo stands on the site of an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Ceres. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross. Inside, it houses a Baroque organ, a polychrome wooden statue, and a silver arm of Saint Panfilo dating from the 15th century. San Panfilo thus brings together an ancient connection to the site, a distinctive floor plan, and sacred furnishings. Polychrome means decorated in several colors; the same description also applies to two small wooden statues in the sanctuary of Madonna della Strada.

The sanctuary of Madonna della Strada was built in the 1960s over the remains of a chapel erected by nomadic shepherds in the 15th century. Two building phases can therefore be distinguished here: the older chapel and the much later sanctuary. Madonna della Strada preserves two polychrome wooden statuettes from the 14th century, as well as a statue of the Virgin Mary considered an important work of the early 16th century and attributed to the circle of Silvestro dell’Aquila. The entrance is accessible to people with disabilities.

The two churches differ considerably in their historical context: at San Panfilo, the ancient connection lies in its location; at Madonna della Strada, it is the 15th-century chapel over whose remains the later sanctuary was built. The artworks add their own historical references to each building’s story.

Medieval traces and palazzo architecture

At Mura e Torri, remains of medieval walls and two towers have been preserved; the original defensive circuit was medieval. Palazzo D’Avalos offers a different perspective: the D’Avalos family had the fortified palazzo built in the 16th century on top of an existing structure. The architectural remains differ in form: here, preserved sections of wall and tower; there, a palazzo built on an older foundation. This makes it possible to distinguish the medieval fortifications from the later palazzo architecture.

Rolling hills and places to visit

Among the area’s natural landmarks is the Bosco dell’Istituto Tecnico Agrario, one of Scerni’s recommended places to visit. Colle dei Sospiri is considered a green spot with fresh air. Alongside the municipality’s agricultural land use, these two named places come into view, each with a different character: the forest as a recommended excursion destination and the hill as a green landscape spot. If you would like to give the rural side of Scerni a place in your travel plans alongside its culture, these suggestions offer another way to explore the town.
