Pretoro brings together a network of uphill lanes, beech forests, archaeological traces and routes to natural and cultural attractions. The historic centre is home to the Centro Museale San Domenico; from a viewpoint, the panorama stretches across the surrounding area. Forests, hiking trails and traces from different periods give your stay a variety of possible focuses.

Forest, wildlife and townscape

The heart of Pretoro’s forest area, particularly its beech forest, now lies within the „Riserva Naturale Guidata Valle del Foro“ nature reserve. The beech forest in Località Asinara and Bosco di Cesano also has the characteristics of mature high forest. The historic centre is defined by narrow, interwoven lanes that climb to a viewpoint with far-reaching views over the surrounding area. The forest landscape and the view from the lanes thus represent two different sides of Pretoro.

The Area Faunistica del Lupo Appenninico in Pretoro is home to several wolves, the emblematic predator of Maiella National Park. Visits are only possible with a guide; check in advance whether visits are currently available.

Hiking trails and their destinations

Hiking trail E4 leads from Località Calvario in Pretoro to the Church of Madonna della Mazza. It is about 3.1 kilometres long, with an ascent of around 260 metres and a descent of around 30 metres. The approximate walking time is listed as 1 hour and 15 minutes. The trail is marked „SENTIERO IN MANUTENZIONE“. Check its status before setting out.

A hike along cave trail E2 leads to Grotta dell'Eremita. Over the centuries, the cave offered shelter to shepherds and hermits and is associated with the cult of water and the Archangel Michael. Just beyond Pretoro, the E2 trail also passes the remains of old houses, mills and water-powered lathes. A hike to Cascata dell'Asinara passes through an impressive forest of large trees before reaching the waterfall. These trails therefore connect a variety of destinations: the Church of Madonna della Mazza, the cave, traces of past working life and the waterfall.

Museum and archaeological traces

The Centro Museale San Domenico is located in the deconsecrated Church of del Purgatorio in the historic centre. It presents Pretoro’s history and more recent archaeological excavations, as well as exhibitions on jewellery, reptiles and wolves. In Località Crocifisso, not far from the present-day town centre, a Neolithic hut dating from 7000 to 4000 BC and Italic tombs from the Hellenistic period, from the 4th to the 1st century BC, have been discovered.

In the Pretoro area, the remains of a Roman villa and a thermal building point to settlement from the 1st century AD onwards. The Roman villa included a room with a geometric mosaic floor, a room with a cocciopesto floor, and the remains of storage rooms and rural dwellings. The archaeological evidence spans different periods and building types, from the Neolithic hut and tombs to the Roman remains.

Crafts, agriculture and festival traditions

Pretoro is known as „Il paese dei fusari“ because spindles for spinning wool were made there. Traditional woodworking, especially in the past, included the production of kitchen utensils in local workshops. The agricultural tradition continues with Mezza Fava: this bean, also known as „Fava nostra“, is still grown in Pretoro as an indigenous Maiella variety.

On the first Sunday in May, the sacred performance „Lu Lope“, the „Miracle of Saint Dominic and the Wolf“, is staged. On the first morning of the festival, the largest and most beautiful snakes found in the area around Pretoro are awarded prizes in the central square. Alongside the town and landscape attractions that define Pretoro throughout the year, travellers can therefore also plan around an annual festival and specific hiking destinations.
