Westerhausen lies on the northern edge of the Bodetal holiday region. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Westerhausen, local history, landscape and routes offer different points of reference for planning. Local highlights include St. Stephani Church, the Local History Museum and Königstein. There are also three named routes that pass through Westerhausen below Königstein.

Local History and Dialect

St. Stephani in Westerhausen dates from the 12th to the 17th century and features Romanesque and Baroque architectural styles. For travellers interested in church architecture, this combination of different styles is a distinctive part of the town’s history. The Local History Museum offers a different focus: it covers around 250 square metres over two floors and explores the town’s historical development, agriculture, domestic culture and community life.

The museum includes original finds from excavations in and around Westerhausen, as well as changing exhibitions on local topics. Many exhibits are also labelled in the local dialect. You can book a guided tour in the local dialect by calling in advance; check current availability before your trip. Finds from the town’s history also extend beyond the museum’s topics: during the great flood around 1790, when the Spültal stream flowed out here, many urns, bones and ceramic objects were found.

Königstein and Protected Landscape

A footpath through Westerhausen leads north to Königstein. The rock formation is regarded as the town’s heraldic rock and as unique in the northern Harz foreland. Königstein and other areas within the Westerhausen municipal district are designated as a landscape protection area. This brings together a local landmark and a protected natural area in the town’s surroundings.

The area around Westerhausen also has numerous sandstone rock formations protected as landscapes, with dry grassland and dwarf-shrub heath. These landscape features are in the vicinity of the destination; they are not the same as the areas within the municipal district. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between the path to Königstein and other protected landscapes nearby.

Routes Through Westerhausen

The Romanesque Route and the German Timber-Frame Road pass through Westerhausen below Königstein. The Harz Foreland Cycle Route also runs through the town. The three routes offer different points of reference for getting around: two named road routes and one cycle route, each linked to Königstein. Together with the church, museum and landscape, they offer a varied picture of Westerhausen, without reducing its highlights to a single route or attraction.

More Destinations in the Wider Thale Destination

The wider Thale destination offers other distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. Wendhusen Abbey was founded in Wendhusen in 825 and is now in Thale’s old town. The Thale Myth Trail is a themed walking route from the exit of the Bode Gorge to the old town; it features thirteen sculptures created by various artists. The Devil’s Wall themed hiking trail also passes through Thale and reaches all the distinctive rock formations of the Devil’s Wall.

The Harz Mountain Theatre is an open-air theatre on the Hexentanzplatz. Its programme features mystical stories, legendary fairy tales, operettas, musicals, plays and concerts; the programme changes seasonally. The chairlift operated by Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt takes you to the Rosstrappe rock massif, while the cable car goes up to the Hexentanzplatz.
