Mountain meadows, small lakes, streams and extensive mixed forests define Allrode. The village is also home to distinctive landmarks, hiking opportunities and activities for the colder months. When planning your stay, you can sort through the destination’s different aspects by landscape, season and interest.

Landscape and sights in Allrode

Nature takes many forms here: open mountain meadows lie alongside small bodies of water and extensive mixed forests. The XXL bench on Schützenplatz offers a specific vantage point. From there, you can see the Brocken, making the bench a named viewpoint within Allrode’s varied landscape.

The Hollow Oak, estimated to be around 900 years old, is another sight. The sequoia on the road toward Hasselfelde is also listed as an attraction. The two trees offer different points of interest: the Hollow Oak is notable for its approximate age, while the sequoia is notable for its location on the road toward Hasselfelde.

Allrode offers not only individual viewpoints, but also an extensive network of hiking trails. During the other months of the year, it invites visitors to explore the Bode Valley and the Harz Mountains. The trails offer a different way to experience the landscape than the individual sights in the village. Conditions on the trails may vary.

Activities by season

During the colder months, Allrode offers winter sports opportunities thanks to its elevation of around 440 metres. How you can make use of them depends on snow conditions. During the other months, hiking takes centre stage: the extensive network of trails leads to the destinations mentioned in the Bode Valley and the Harz Mountains. The seasonal change from winter sports opportunities to hiking is a useful guide when planning your trip.

Nearby lies Echowiese, a large forest clearing between Allrode and Friedrichsbrunn. The Harzer Wandernadel stamp box is located in its shelter. This destination beyond the immediate village adds to Allrode’s nature and hiking connections; the clearing, its location between the two villages and the stamping point are the specific details to note.

History and other destinations in the wider destination of Thale

Allrode was first mentioned in 961. This early date adds a historical connection to the village’s landscape and seasonal attractions. The wider destination of Thale offers further historical and cultural topics: Wendhusen Monastery was founded in 825 in Wendhusen, now part of Thale’s old town.

The Thale Myth Trail is a themed footpath from the entrance to the Bode Valley to Thale’s old town. Along the route are thirteen sculptures created by various artists. The Devil’s Wall themed hiking trail also passes through Thale; it takes in all the distinctive rock formations of the Devil’s Wall. The two trails offer different focuses: the Myth Trail combines art and theme, while the Devil’s Wall Trail draws attention to the rock formations.

Thale’s cultural offerings include the GDR Museum, dedicated to domestic and everyday life in the GDR, and the Harz Mountain Theatre on the Hexentanzplatz. The mountain theatre is an open-air theatre. Its programme includes mystical stories, legendary fairy tales, operettas, musicals, plays and concerts; the programme changes seasonally.

The Thale Cable Cars Adventure World also offers a choice of destinations: take the chairlift to the Rosstrappe, or the gondola lift up to the Hexentanzplatz. Operating times vary by season and should be checked before travelling. Thale is also a starting point for hikes into the Bode Valley and the starting point of the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail. The wider destination therefore offers a choice of cultural attractions as well as hiking and nature experiences.
