Discover Weddersleben: Teufelsmauer and St. Michael’s Church
Accommodation in Weddersleben
Weddersleben combines a strong sense of place with destinations in the immediate area. St. Michael’s Church is in the village; the Teufelsmauer, a marked circular hike and a viewpoint shape the landscape around it. If you are looking for a hotel, you can begin by deciding what matters most: the village itself, trails in the surrounding area, or other destinations in the wider Thale travel region.
Hiking trails and views at the Teufelsmauer
A circular hike in the immediate area starts at the Teufelsmauer car park by the Bode bridge between Weddersleben and Neinstedt. From there, it follows the signs for “Teufelsmauer” marked with the “Teufel” symbol. Route details may change, so check them before setting out.
From the Teufelsmauer near Königsstein, you can enjoy views of the wooded edge of the Harz, the northern Harz foothills and Weddersleben to the north.
In the wider region, the 35-kilometre Teufelsmauerstieg trail opened in August 2009. It runs from Ballenstedt to Blankenburg along all the rock formations of the Teufelsmauer. When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing between the two: the circular hike starts at the Bode bridge between Weddersleben and Neinstedt, while the Teufelsmauerstieg runs for 35 kilometres from Ballenstedt to Blankenburg. This makes it easy to tell apart a circular trail in the immediate area and the regional route.
A cultural landmark in Weddersleben
St. Michael’s Church is located in Weddersleben. Alongside the trails and viewpoints in the surrounding area, it provides a cultural landmark right in the village.
More destinations in the wider Thale travel region
The wider Thale travel region also offers historical, cultural and scenic attractions. Wendhusen Abbey was founded in Wendhusen in 825; Wendhusen is now part of Thale’s old town.
The Thalenser Mythenweg is a themed walking trail from the entrance to the Bode Gorge to Thale’s old town. It features thirteen sculptures created by various artists. The Teufelsmauer themed hiking trail has a different focus: it passes through Thale and takes in all the distinctive rock formations of the Teufelsmauer.
The Harzer Bergtheater is an open-air theatre on the Hexentanzplatz. Its programme features mystical stories, legendary fairy tales, operettas, musicals, plays and concerts. The programme changes with the seasons, so check which performances are scheduled for your dates before travelling.
Take the chairlift operated by Seilbahnen Thale Erlebniswelt to reach the Rosstrappe rock massif; the gondola lift takes you up to the Hexentanzplatz. Operating times vary by season, so check the timetables before your trip. Thale is also a starting point for hikes into the Bode Gorge and for the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail. The DDR Museum Thale focuses on home and everyday life in the GDR.
