Zerrenthin offers several points of interest to help you plan your trip: the village church with its architectural and artistic history, cycling tours on agricultural roads, and the Zerrenthin Meadows in the surrounding area. This lets you choose between architecture, cycling and landscapes as the focus of your visit.

Village Church: Architectural History, Wall Paintings and Bell

Zerrenthin Village Church is the largest and oldest church in the parish and dates back to the 13th century. Its tower rises to a height of about 46 metres. Its structure includes a square wooden bell chamber and a pointed, copper-covered spire. A war memorial stands on the north side of the church.

The church contains a series of wall paintings running around its interior, probably created in the first half of the 16th century. They were uncovered in 1970 and restored from 1994 to 1996. The probable dating and the later restoration work are two distinct stages in their history: the former places the paintings in time, while the latter describes their preservation.

Another special feature is the old bell, cast by Martin Heintze in Berlin in 1681. It formerly belonged to St. Mary’s Church in Pasewalk and has rung in Zerrenthin Village Church since 1997 as a permanent loan. Its former home and its current loan connect the bell with two different places and periods.

Services are held regularly in the village church. If you would like to plan your trip around a service, check the current times in advance.

Zerrenthin Meadows and Cycling Tours

The Zerrenthin Meadows are nearby, between Krugsdorf, Koblentz, Zerrenthin and Breitenstein. The moorland grassland is used for haymaking and grazing and is an important stopover and resting place for numerous wading birds. These include golden plovers, whimbrels, ruffs, Eurasian curlews and northern lapwings. For nature enthusiasts, these species offer a concrete insight into the meadows’ importance as a resting area.

The meadows are by far the largest of the five inland salt sites in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Their history is also connected with their salt content: salt was extracted from the moor in the Zerrenthin Meadows until as late as the 18th century because of its sometimes high salt content. Their current use as meadows and pasture and their former salt extraction describe different aspects of this landscape.

Cycling tours offer another distinct point of interest: well-maintained agricultural roads make it possible to take extended rides from Zerrenthin into the attractive surrounding area. This means that, alongside the church, cyclists can also enjoy excursions on local roads. The information describes a local option without specifying a particular circular route.

Seasonal Produce from the Farm Shop

The farm shop at Hof Bischoff in Zerrenthin offers seasonal products made from livestock slaughtered and processed on the farm, as well as produce from the garden. This may be worth considering when planning your trip if you would like to include local products. If you have particular products in mind, check their current availability in advance; the selection is seasonal.
