Accommodation in Viereck
Viereck is a municipality in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald. If you are looking for a hotel in Viereck, the local history and landscape can help you choose a destination that suits your interests. Key themes include the settlement’s founding by people from the Palatinate, the village layout, religious art and the distinct character of its localities. This makes it possible to distinguish Viereck’s local highlights from the wider range of things to see in the district.
History and the village name
Viereck was founded by immigrants from the Palatinate. More specifically, it was the third village in Pomerania to be founded by Catholic settlers from the Palatinate. The village name also recalls a later chapter: in 1751, Viereck was renamed in honour of the Prussian minister Adam Otto von Viereck. It was previously called Jägersberg. The village’s founding and its change of name therefore provide two distinct points of reference for its history.
A village green and local character
Viereck is apparently considered a village green settlement. This type of settlement is a village whose houses are arranged around a central open space. In the centre, the village cemetery occupies the otherwise undeveloped area. The settlement layout and the cemetery are thus closely connected to the character of the village centre. Houses dating from the Gründerzeit period are also among Viereck’s sights and offer another glimpse into the village’s architectural history.
Church history
The Catholic church is considered well worth a visit. The Church of the Nativity of Mary houses a processional cross dating from the 18th century. Before the present church, a simple half-timbered church served as Viereck’s place of worship. The historic cross and the former church building represent different aspects of the local church history: one is a specific item of church furnishings, while the other belongs to the history preceding the present church building.
Forest, cemetery and river
The localities also have distinct characters. Uhlenkrug is situated in the forest and is home to an old cemetery considered worth seeing. Stallberg lies on the Uecker. The forest setting and cemetery therefore characterise one locality, while the other is distinguished by its riverside location. For travellers interested in landscapes and historic places, these offer different points of interest within the area described.
The Vorpommern-Greifswald district
The wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald extends beyond Viereck to encompass the district. Its three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. The Ueckermünde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. These natural and cultural attractions complement Viereck’s local highlights with other facets of the wider destination.
