Almost 40 percent of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is made up of three nature parks. Museums, a zoo, hiking trails and cycling routes also offer different ways to shape a trip. Whether you want to combine nature and exercise, cultural history, or both, there are plenty of ideas to help you plan your stay.

Nature and cycling in the district

The UeckermĂĽnde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding. There are several regional routes to choose from for cycling tours. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of EuroVelo route EV10, enters the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The Szczecin Lagoon Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are regional cycling routes that let you explore the district.

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route enters the district; the Szczecin Lagoon Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are regional cycling routes you can use to explore the district. Check the current route and signage before setting off.

Museums, technology and Greifswald’s old town

The Juliett U-461 is moored in PeenemĂĽnde harbour as a museum and can be explored on a tour. You can book guided tours of the historic landscape through the PeenemĂĽnde Historical Technical Museum. Check the current access and booking arrangements before your visit.

In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. A culinary tour of the historic old town offers a different perspective on the city: it visits four Greifswald restaurants serving sweet and savoury treats.

The Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam, Lilienthal’s hometown, is a technical museum dedicated to the aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal. Together with the tapestry in Greifswald and tours of Peenemünde’s historic landscape, it offers a varied selection of cultural, historical and technical subjects.

The zoo and unique experiences

More than 1,120 native and exotic animals representing 95 species live at UeckermĂĽnde Zoo; feeding demonstrations take place daily. If these are important to your plans, check the current daily schedule in advance. The zoo also offers school classes a visit to its ZOOSchule.

A boat trip at Ukranenland Torgelow is an active experience: it uses the first Slavic boat to be reconstructed in Germany, and participants have to row themselves. This makes it quite different from a museum visit or a guided tour of a historic landscape.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a hotel, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. If you mainly want to cycle or explore the UeckermĂĽnde Heath on foot, your plans will look different from a trip centred on museums, an old-town tour and the zoo. Think about which experiences you want to include, then plan the rest of your trip around the places where they take place.
