Amt Landhagen: Discover Culture and Routes
Accommodation in Amt Landhagen
Amt Landhagen comprises nine municipalities. Together with the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald, they form the heart of the region, which is shaped by its Baltic Sea setting and rural landscapes. This lets you match your hotel choice to your own travel plans and check the location of a specific offer.
Church and Pilgrims’ Chapel in Levenhagen
In Levenhagen, a 13th-century church stands beside a pilgrims’ chapel dating from the second half of the 15th century. The two buildings form a historical contrast, having been built at different times, and stand right next to each other. You can explore the buildings and grounds digitally with an app. Check whether the app is available before your visit.
Routes through Wackerow
The Baltic Coast Cycle Route passes through Wackerow on its way towards Greifswald. The Via Baltica follows the former railway embankment of the Greifswald–Tribsees line through the municipality and onwards towards Rostock. This provides two distinct points of reference: the direction towards Greifswald for the cycling route, and the course of the former railway line for the Via Baltica. Before setting out on a specific tour, check whether local construction work or diversions affect the route.
Gristow Nature Adventure Park
Gristow Nature Adventure Park covers around 70 hectares. Its nine kilometres of walking trails pass through a variety of biotopes. The park also has playgrounds, petting enclosures, a traffic garden and a kitchen garden. Around 300 animals can be observed there, including sheep, goats, horses and fallow deer. The park also hosts the traditional horseback barrel-knocking event each year.
The trails, animal watching, play areas and gardens offer visitors a variety of activities. As facilities and animal numbers may change, check which attractions are currently available before planning your visit.
Greifswald: Brick Gothic, Art and Routes
Medieval brick Gothic architecture shapes the character of Greifswald’s historic old town. St. Nikolai Cathedral is a cultural monument of national significance and the church where painter Caspar David Friedrich was baptised. The history of architecture and the painter’s life thus meet in one place.
The Greifswald Caspar David Friedrich Art Trail runs through Greifswald and the surrounding area. Its 15 stops take in important places in the painter’s life and work, and can be explored independently on foot or by bicycle. The ramparts offer a different kind of route: extending for more than two kilometres around the historic heart of Greifswald, they invite visitors to enjoy long walks throughout the year.
A well-surfaced towpath leads from the museum harbour in the city centre for around five kilometres along the Ryck directly to the fishing village of Wieck. Its length and destinations set it apart from the walking routes around the old town. Wieck is also home to the swing bridge, which was ceremoniously inaugurated on 25 July 1887. Its two 13.30-metre-long leaves are still drawn by hand.
Greifswald’s museum harbour is home to more than 50 ships and is considered Germany’s largest museum harbour. Together with the cathedral and historic old town, it offers another highlight for anyone wishing to include cultural history and maritime themes in their travel plans.
