Diedrichshagen: Village Cinema and Archaeology
Accommodation in Diedrichshagen
Diedrichshagen offers travelers several specific points of interest: its first documented mention, archaeological traces, a village cinema and an annual forest hike. The topics therefore range from the history of the place to activities throughout the year.
History and archaeological traces
Diedrichshagen was first mentioned in a document in 1271 under the name “Diderichshagen.” This first mention provides a fixed point in time for the history of the place, alongside archaeological finds that tell of much older activities.
Remains of an ancient, high-capacity production facility for extracting iron and producing charcoal were found in the Diedrichshagen district. The find points to early production activities, without requiring a specific present-day place to visit to be named.
Another archaeological reference concerns the Diedrichshagen 22 hearth site: some hearths there have been dated to around 550 BC. At the same hearth site, the belt of cooking-stone pits can be traced over a distance of 955 meters. The documented mention and these archaeological findings reveal different time horizons in the history of the place.
Village culture and activity
Diedrichshagen’s village cinema celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025. For travelers interested in local culture as well as the history of the place, this is another specific point of interest.
The kite festival is also associated with Diedrichshagen: in 2022, the festival in the district marked its tenth anniversary. This year refers to the event’s history at that time, not to a future date.
A popular forest hike begins annually at the forester’s lodge northeast of Diedrichshagen. It complements the historical themes with a recurring activity in the landscape. If you want to take part, check for a specific date before your trip.
Getting around and the landscape
The VG K10 municipal road is a specific point of reference for finding your way around the region. Coming from the B109, it connects the districts of Diedrichshagen and Guest and continues toward Weitenhagen.
The former municipality of Diedrichshagen was surrounded by forests and meadows and was considered to be in a scenic location. Its historical connection to the former municipality remains a distinct aspect alongside the archaeological sites and the present-day place name.
In the wider destination of Weitenhagen
Weitenhagen also offers its own historical points of interest. The village church in Weitenhagen is mentioned as early as 1280 and has been the spiritual center of the House of Silence since 1968. Its 15th-century brick portal features a basket-handle archway and circular blind arches. The churchyard contains three Brigittenkreuze, or Bridget’s crosses, which are said to commemorate Birgitta of Sweden. The sexton’s house, built in 1795, is one of the village’s historical attractions, together with Weitenhagen Church.
In Weitenhagen, the narrow-gauge railway embankment is now a well-used walking and jogging route connecting Weitenhagen and Grubenhagen. About halfway along, it passes the clay pit, a popular place to rest during walks and hikes. The historic Lorendamm can still be seen to the northeast; clay was transported along it to the brickworks in Helmshagen.
The Potthäger Forest, which covers the southern part of the municipality of Weitenhagen, has a network of hiking trails. Their routes are shown on maps at the start of Guester Weg, at the crossroads between Pott and Weitenhagen; check on site to see whether the maps are available. The forest covers more than 1,000 hectares in total, with bogs, meadows, and a rich variety of flora and fauna.
