Brietzig: Location and historical themes
Brietzig can be placed in context for travel planning through two specific points of reference and its historic buildings. The Uecker is near the town; the A 20 is also nearby. The river and motorway offer different points of reference: one is a body of water in the surrounding area, the other a route for getting there. Please check the current route for your specific journey. Brietzig’s cultural and historical features include a medieval fieldstone church, the churchyard and a war memorial.
Church, churchyard and war memorial
The rectangular fieldstone church dates from the second half of the 13th century. On the east side of the nave are a group of three windows and a blind gable. In addition to its historical period, the building therefore has specific architectural features that may be of interest to travellers interested in medieval ecclesiastical architecture.
The war memorial commemorates the First World War. A description from 2010 places it in a central square in the town. It describes an obelisk topped by a red-painted flame bowl. Within the enclosure are individual memorial stones for Paul Dräger, Eduard Jänke, Ferdinand Krüger, Bruno Mannigel, Gustav Müller, Ernst, Ferdinand and Gustav Prepernau, Wilhelm Wacker and Gustav Werth. The memorial thus brings together collective remembrance of the war and individual tributes by name.
The churchyard also adds to the picture of the town’s history. A description from 2010 reports that it was being used as a cemetery at that time. It also mentions three cast-iron grave crosses dating from around 1900. The references to the church, cemetery and memorial show different forms of remembrance and give Brietzig a distinct cultural and historical focus.
