Rostock: Nature, Culture and Excursions
Accommodation in Rostock
For a hotel stay in Rostock, you can plan your trip around nature, culture or active pursuits. Many excursion destinations are in the Rostock district or the Rostock region; their place names help make your plans more specific. First decide which themes matter to you, then factor in the locations of the destinations when choosing where to stay.
Nature, Wildlife Watching and Outdoor Activities
In Sternberger Seenland Nature Park, deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests shape the landscape. The nature park is particularly well suited to hiking and cycling. If you would like to experience a variety of landscapes during your stay, the lakes, forests and river valleys here offer specific points of reference for planning your trip.
In Sternberger Seenland, Nossentiner-Schwinzer-Heide, Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Kummerower See nature parks, as well as at Wildpark-MV, there are discovery tours featuring beavers, wolves and white-tailed eagles. At Wildpark-MV, you can explore the park on your own or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. This gives you the option of planning independent exploration or themed guided tours for your stay.
Activities with a Distinctive Character
Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. One special feature is the 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zip line, which runs directly over the lake. The different courses and long zip line make this a clearly activity-focused excursion. As facilities can change, it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.
In Rövershagen, Karls Erlebnis-Dorf offers more than 50 experiences. These include Karls Bonbonland, an indoor adventure world covering more than 2,000 square metres. The Manufakturen-Markt offers a different experience: visitors can discover handmade jams, confectionery and chocolate, as well as freshly brewed coffee. Around Bützow, the Milchstraße shows how agriculture works. These offerings range from a large-scale adventure world and handcrafted products to an introduction to agricultural work.
Cultural Sites and History
The Wolhynian Resettler Museum in Linstow offers guided tours for groups and individuals. Ethnographic objects, photographs and documents present the history of the Volhynian Germans, from the mid-19th century to their settlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The tour combines objects and visual material to tell a story spanning a broad historical period.
Güstrow is home to Mecklenburg’s oldest surviving civic theatre. Other historic sights in the Rostock region include the former monastery in Rühn and the minster in Bad Doberan. Traditional crafts can be seen at other locations: the twin mills of Neu Vorwerk showcase historic working methods, while in Alt Kalen a windmill operator still mills flour. Cultural interests here range from theatre history and historic architecture to traditional crafts.
The Coast, the Molli Railway and Getting Around the Region
The Rostock region is bordered by 62 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, with a number of seaside resorts. The historic Molli railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. Its unusual 900-millimetre gauge has shaped the coastal landscape since 1886. The coast and railway are two distinctive themes that can be considered separately when planning: as a landscape and as a historic railway line.
For getting around the region, buses and trains in the Rostock district operate as part of the transport network. With one ticket, you can travel throughout the region, including the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock. Check the current timetable when planning specific excursions. If travelling by car, you can use the region’s main roads for orientation: the A19 leads into the Rostock district from the south, where it crosses the A20, which runs from west to east.
