Lüssow combines an early written mention with buildings from different centuries and a landscape shaped by agriculture. If you are looking for a hotel in Lüssow, these features can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: local history, architecture, or landscape.

Landscape and Early History

Lüssow was first mentioned in 1229. The Hohen Sprenzer Mühlbach stream crosses the municipality and flows into the Nebel Canal. The landscape around Lüssow is also shaped by agriculture. The waterways and agricultural landscape offer different ways to understand the character of the place.

Buildings and Historical Traces

The fieldstone and brick church dates from 1257. Together with the first mention in 1229, its construction date provides two concrete points of reference for dating the area’s early history. Another attraction in Lüssow is the Hilgenbarg, a Bronze Age burial mound. The church and the burial mound represent different historical periods.

The Rostock district register of listed monuments dated May 14, 2024, includes the cemetery at Friedhofsweg/Schwiesower Straße, with its gate, Reichhoff grave slabs, and mausoleum; the rectory at Friedhofsweg 10; and the railway station at Zum Bahnhof 27. These buildings and features reflect different aspects of the area, from the cemetery with its gravestones and mausoleum to the rectory and railway station.

A drawbridge dating from 1895, listed as a monument, stands over the Nebel Canal. It adds another waterside structure to the area’s historical landmarks. Several phases in the building history of Lüssow Manor are documented: it was built at the end of the 18th century, and many historical details have been preserved. In the 19th century, a solid brick façade and an extension were added. This makes it possible to distinguish the original construction period from later additions.

Karow also has named historical attractions: the former administrator’s house of the castle, known as the hunting school, and an old court column. These examples broaden the view of local history to include a former administrator’s house and a historical symbol of the law.

Rostock in the Wider Travel Context

In the wider Rostock travel destination, Sternberg Lake District Nature Park offers a distinctive natural setting. Its landscape includes deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills, and extensive forests; the nature park is particularly suited to hiking and cycling. The Wolhynian Resettler Museum in Linstow offers a different perspective on regional history. Guided tours are available for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photographs, and documents, the tours explain the history of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century to their resettlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. These regional themes are distinct from Lüssow’s local profile and complement it with nature experiences and historical interpretation.
