Werdum: Church, Mill and Seasonal Experiences
Accommodation in Werdum
When you choose Werdum as a destination for a hotel stay, architectural history and seasonal activities come together. St. Nicolai Church and the earth-sheltered Dutch windmill give the village historic landmarks; the blacksmith’s forge, Backhuus bakery and the “Rasender Kalle” tourist train add other highlights. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing historic buildings from activities that are seasonal or tied to specific dates.
Church and mill: local architectural history
According to the latest findings, St. Nicolai Church, located on a terp, dates to between 1230 and 1250. Its organ also has a clearly defined history: Johann Diepenbrock built it in 1897/98, with 14 stops across two manuals and a pedal, as well as mechanical cone chests. It has been fully preserved; Martin Haspelmath thoroughly restored it in 1987/88. This makes it easy to distinguish the building’s history, dated to the 13th century, from the later history of the organ.
The earth-sheltered Dutch windmill was built in 1748 on a terp by the lord of Edenserloog Castle. Today it is open as a museum; a small collection of old household, barn and farming tools is displayed in the basement. The mill therefore focuses on architectural history and historical equipment. From April to October, mill tours take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, ending with a miller’s diploma. Check seasonal arrangements and current dates before visiting.
Blacksmith’s forge, petting zoo and Backhuus bakery
At the Historic Blacksmith’s Forge, the blacksmith demonstrates traditional craftsmanship to guests on request, forging horseshoes, hearts and other items. He is on site from April to October. Both making a request and visiting during the seasonal period are therefore essential for seeing the demonstration.
Werdum Petting Zoo breeds old domestic animal breeds that are at risk of extinction. A mini-golf course is located at “Ankerplatz Werdum.” These are quite different attractions: one focuses on breeding old breeds, while the other offers mini-golf—two different highlights from the architectural and craft history of the church, mill and forge.
The Backhuus bakery also combines craftsmanship with hands-on activities, but on a seasonal basis: its program gives children the chance to bake bread on a stick and cookies. From April to October, regular wood-fired oven baking events take place at the old Backhuus, every day except Saturday. Check current dates before your trip, especially if you would like to include these activities in your plans.
Explore Werdum on a sightseeing tour
The “Rasender Kalle” tourist train offers a roughly 30-minute sightseeing tour of Werdum. It passes the mill and forge; Edenserloog Castle and St. Nicolai Church are along the route. The tour brings several historic landmarks together in one trip. As the train runs seasonally, check current departure times before your trip.
Match your travel dates to your interests
For your plans, the main distinction is between duration and date restrictions: the sightseeing tour is listed as taking roughly 30 minutes, while mill tours, baking events and blacksmith demonstrations depend on the season, days of the week or prior request. If one of these activities is central to your stay, check the relevant dates and choose your hotel based on your travel dates.
