Esens: Museums, History and City Tours
Accommodation in Esens
You can put together a cultural itinerary for a stay in Esens around a range of topics: Jewish life in East Frisia, the history of the town and its settlements, church architecture, historic technology and public art. Museums, guided tours and annual events offer different perspectives on the town. Which stops you include depends on whether you want to focus on exhibitions, architectural history, or art and event dates.
Museums: Jewish Life and Local History
The August Gottschalk House Jewish Museum is housed in the former community center of the Jewish community of Esens, built in 1899. Its permanent exhibition explores Jewish life in East Frisia up to the dissolution of the Jewish communities in 1940. Its main themes include everyday life, religious life and Jewish holidays, as well as persecution and extermination. You can also visit the restored mikveh: the original, preserved ritual bath of the Jewish community in Esens.
The Leben am Meer Museum offers a different perspective. It presents the settlement history of Harlingerland and the history of the town of Esens. An old watchmaker’s workshop and a tiled room offer insights into the craft and everyday culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Alongside regional and local history, the museum highlights specific examples of crafts and everyday life in the past.
Church Architecture, Tower Museum and Views
The Tower Museum, which opened in 1982, is located in the tower of St. Magnus Church. Climb 113 steps to the sound openings, where views stretch across the rooftops of Esens to the coast. The church itself is a 57-meter-long, three-aisled hall church in the shape of a cross, with a choir and eastern apse. Its Neo-Gothic interior has seating for 1,500. The Tower Museum and the church building offer different points of interest: the 1873 clock mechanism and the view from above on the one hand, and the layout, dimensions and interior on the other.
Walking Tours, Art and Events
The Esenser Bärenflyer can serve as a starting point for a walking tour of Esens; it is available to download and from the tourist information office. A guided city tour takes you across the market square, through the pedestrian zone and along the former ramparts. Along the way, you’ll learn about the town’s past and present. The flyer is a way to get started independently, while the guided tour follows this route with commentary.
Public art is also part of what Esens has to offer: the sculpture trail features seven works of art. There are also 52 Buddy Bears, considered attractions and photo opportunities for visitors and locals alike. The Esens small arts festival is an annual tradition in the old town. The program includes street theater, variety acts, acrobatics, clowning and music; specific program details may change.
Another annual event takes place on the last Friday in October. It features pumpkins, costumes and spooky characters, family activities and performances in the market square. If you want to plan your stay around an event, check the date and program in advance.
