Neuschoo can be explored through three specific themes: the Holtriem Hiking Trail, the history of Bethlehem Church, and therapeutic horseback riding. They appeal to different interests—from a longer hiking route to local church history and a therapeutic program for several age groups. If you are looking for hotels for your trip, this thematic focus can help you decide whether the destination is right for you.

Hiking on the Holtriem Hiking Trail

The Holtriem Hiking Trail is about 48 kilometers long. In Neuschoo, it crosses the 7°30' meridian; it also passes through the scenic landscapes of Holtriem. The circular trail runs away from main roads and is well signposted. A meridian is an imaginary line of longitude and gives the route a specific geographic reference point here. In this way, a precise point in Neuschoo and a description of Holtriem’s landscape meet along the same hiking trail.

The total length describes the trail as a whole. At the same time, you can leave it in any village and explore it in sections. This means there is a distinction between the roughly 48-kilometer full route and the option of exploring it in shorter sections. Shelters and information boards are gradually being added along the trail. The combination of a full route and section-by-section exploration provides a practical basis for including the hiking trail in your travel plans.

Bethlehem Church and Its History

The chapel in Neuschoo was consecrated on May 31, 1869. It was named Bethlehem Church; the bricks used to build it came from the neighboring Neuschoo brickworks. Franz KlĂĽsner was the first preacher in Neuschoo, serving from 1869 to 1872. These details shed light on different aspects of local history: the consecration, the building material, and a named figure from the early years of church activity. In 1975, the church received a larger entrance hall. Alongside the time of its consecration, this brings a later structural expansion and the first years of the preaching ministry into view as distinct historical milestones.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding

Therapeutic Reiten Ostfriesland offers therapeutic horseback riding in Neuschoo for children, teenagers, and adults. Four horses are available for the program. The age groups and number of horses give the offering a specific framework; its focus differs from hiking and church history.

More Themes in the Wider Wittmund Destination

The wider Wittmund destination offers additional cultural and natural themes. The PeldemĂĽhle was built in 1741 to dehull barley, together with a residential building and barn. The historic bakehouse also demonstrates how grain is processed into bread, from flour to finished loaf. The mill and the processing demonstrate different aspects of the history of grain.

The Robert von Zeppelin and Aviation Museum in Wittmund opened in the pedestrian zone in June 2015. It presents regional history closely connected with aviation and introduces young people in particular to the historic Wittmundhafen airfield. Aviation artifacts are displayed alongside works by local artists and other exhibits.

The Wittmund Forest also offers a connection with nature: it covers more than 700 hectares and has hiking trails as well as paths for woodland walks and cycling tours. The forest is also home to a circular bog, described as an Ice Age Pingo ruin, with a viewing platform and bench. The wider Wittmund destination therefore encompasses both cultural history and opportunities for activities in the forest.
