Discover Holtriem: Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Holtriem
If you are looking for a hotel in Holtriem, you can plan your trip around the experiences that matter to you: the circular hiking trail, nature activities, industrial heritage, and a rose garden each offer a different focus. The details below about the trails, landscape, and sights will help you plan what to see and do during your stay.
Hiking and Nature
The Holtriem Hiking Trail is about 48 kilometres long and forms a circular route through the scenic areas of Holtriem. It connects existing rural roads and is well signposted. You can leave the trail in any village; families with children can explore it in sections.
The “Ewiges Meer” nature trail provides information on twelve panels, supplemented by question-and-answer games and lift-and-turn elements. The two trails offer different experiences: the Holtriem Hiking Trail is a circular route that can be explored in sections, while the nature trail focuses on information and interactive features.
Cycling and Landscape
Holtriem has a well-signposted network of cycle routes. The landscape includes largely unspoilt and intact marshland, geestland, and moorland. Swimming is possible as a leisure activity in Holtriem. If you plan to go swimming, check the specific conditions locally.
Culture and Industrial Heritage
The Nenndorf peat-fired brickworks was built in 1896 and preserves traditional production processes. It contains the oldest Hoffmann ring kiln in Germany fired with peat. For anyone interested in historic technology, it brings together a clearly dated building, a traditional production method, and a distinctive type of kiln.
The Dutch windmill is considered a landmark of the Holtriem collective municipality. A special attraction at the Norderland wind farm is a wind turbine whose design features an internal spiral staircase and a glazed observation rotunda beneath the machinery house. They differ both in what they are and in their technology: the brickworks and ring kiln represent traditional production, while the wind turbine stands out for its distinctive design.
Rose Garden and Visitor Information
The Kastrop Rose Garden in Eversmeer covers about 2,000 square metres and is home to 60 to 70 varieties of roses. As its appearance changes with the seasons and current displays may vary, check the information before visiting.
CultureCall provides telephone-based cultural information about eleven historic sites in the Holtriem collective municipality, each marked with uniform signs. If you would like to use the service, check the current contact details beforehand.
Church and Organ in Westerholt
The church in Westerholt was probably built between 1250 and 1270; remnants of medieval paintings survive on its south wall. Its pulpit is one of the oldest wooden pulpits in East Frisia. The organ of the Westerholt Peace Church was built between 1840 and 1842 by Esens organ builder Arnold Rohlfs. The instrument, with one manual, an attached pedal, and eight stops, is largely preserved; Martin Haspelmath restored it in 1988/89.
