Friedeburg’s tourist attractions range from churches and Gulfhaus farmhouses to woodland, hedgerows and canal scenery. For planning purposes, the main attractions can be divided into two areas: cultural history on the one hand, and outdoor routes and activities on the other. There is also a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and regional produce, providing further places to visit.

Churches and Gulfhaus farmhouses

St. Marcus Church in Marx is one of the last four largely preserved granite ashlar churches in East Frisia and Friedeburg’s oldest stone church. It is thought to date from around the 12th century. St. Mauritius Church, a Gothic church from the 13th century, stands in Horsten. Its freestanding bell tower was probably built in 1645. The two religious buildings therefore differ both in their stated dates and in their described architectural styles.

The Friedeburg Local History Museum is housed in the rear part of a Gulfhaus farmhouse. In Etzel, the Dörpslü-Hus is a small Gulfhaus farmhouse dating from the 18th century that hosts exhibitions, talks and cultural events; the programme may vary. Friedeburg Star Route 8 is a church-history route through the municipality. It complements the individual buildings with a thematic perspective on church history.

On foot, by bike and on the water

A seven-kilometre circular walk connects the villages of RuĂźland and Amerika. Check the path conditions locally. Friedeburg Star Route 4 is approximately 20.1 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 21 minutes. It is a family-friendly circular route through geest and marshland. Route data and ratings may be updated; check the information before setting out.

Friedeburg’s landscape can also be explored by bike and canoe. There is a paddle-and-pedal station on the Ems-Jade Canal. If you plan to use it, check that it is currently operating beforehand. Meadows and woodland lie directly alongside the canal in Friedeburg. Alongside the named routes, the riverside landscape and activities on the water offer further options to consider in your plans.

Landscape, outdoor swimming pool and regional produce

Important places to visit in Friedeburg include its woodland, many kilometres of cycle paths and characteristic hedgerow landscape. The natural outdoor swimming pool and forest pool has a sandy beach, green play and sunbathing lawns, and play equipment. The facility is seasonal; check its operating conditions for your planned visit. Farm shops and weekly markets offer fresh local produce and are places to visit if you would like to include these products in your plans.

For travellers with motorhomes, the SchĂĽtzenweg motorhome parking area offers a quiet, centrally located overnight stop. Facilities and availability may change; check both before your trip. This option is specifically for motorhomes and can be distinguished from the search for a hotel.
