Mardorf lies on the northern shore of Lake Steinhude. The village combines an almost five-kilometre lakeside promenade with opportunities to observe nature in wetland and moorland landscapes, as well as a historic ensemble at Aloys-Bunge-Platz. This means that the lakeshore, nature trails and local history offer distinct focal points for a stay in Mardorf.

Lakeshore and Nature Trails

The lakeside promenade stretches for almost five kilometres and offers jetties and views across the lake. Those interested in nature and birdlife will find a different focus on the Meerbruch Nature Trail: the 600 m-long trail runs through wetland and moor habitats. Observation huts, information about birdlife and a viewing platform with views towards Lake Steinhude and Wilhelmstein Island add to the nature-watching experience.

The two route lengths provide a practical guide: the 600 m nature trail contrasts with the almost five-kilometre lakeside promenade. This lets you choose between a short nature trail and the longer stretch along the shore when planning your visit. Access within the protected area may be regulated seasonally; check the conditions before visiting.

Beach and Boat Trips

There is a sandy beach for swimming at WeiĂźe DĂĽne. The surf beach at WeiĂźer Berg is used by windsurfers and kitesurfers. The two named locations therefore offer different activities: swimming at WeiĂźe DĂĽne, and windsurfing and kitesurfing at WeiĂźer Berg.

Passenger boat trips to Wilhelmstein Island depart from Mardorf’s lakeside route. As boat services operate seasonally, check the timetable before planning your trip. The beach options and boat trip offer different ways to experience the lake.

Mardorf’s Historic Village Centre

At the central Aloys-Bunge-Platz, an ensemble of half-timbered buildings, a local history museum, a former village school, a bakery and storage buildings forms the historic village centre. It also includes a half-timbered chapel dating from 1722. The chapel and the other buildings make the square a sightseeing highlight in its own right, alongside the lakeshore and nature trails.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Neustadt am RĂĽbenberge

The wider destination of Neustadt am Rübenberge also has its own cultural and historical highlights. Schloss Landestrost was built between 1573 and 1584 as a representative Renaissance building. Its rooms regularly host exhibitions and events such as theatre performances, concerts and readings. While Mardorf’s village centre is shaped by an ensemble of different village buildings, a Renaissance building takes centre stage here.

The Liebfrauenkirche in Neustadt am RĂĽbenberge was first mentioned in a document in 1247. It was initially built as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica and was remodelled in the Gothic style in 1502. The church lies on a secondary route of the Loccum-Volkenroda Pilgrimage Trail. It is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm from 1 April to 31 October; check the opening times before your visit.
