Uetze combines water and nature attractions with historic sites and leisure activities. At Irenensee, the lake, swimming and other activities take center stage; in Hänigsen, the tar pits and an old mill tell different aspects of local history. Cycling and hiking trails, as well as horseback riding, add to the options.

Water and scenery at Irenensee

Irenensee in Uetze is the largest of the Spreewald lakes. It is surrounded by the Schilfbruch landscape and a nature reserve. The lake covers 14 hectares. Its features include a shallow-water zone, a water playground and a rope stretched across the lake. At Irenensee, the water, the surrounding natural environment and various waterside features can all be enjoyed side by side.

Swimming is possible at Irenensee, where pedal boats and go-karts can also be rented. Rental availability may vary seasonally. Check current bathing conditions before your visit, and bear seasonal availability in mind if you plan to rent.

Trails and outdoor activities

Uetze has cycling and hiking trails through meadows and forests, as well as along bodies of water. This means walks and bike rides take in a variety of landscapes, not just the area around the lake. Uetze is also part of the Hannover Horse Region and offers activities such as horseback riding. Hiking, cycling and horseback riding offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

Cultural history in Hänigsen

The tar pits in Hänigsen are the oldest documented oil deposit in northern Germany. The open-air site features an oil laboratory, drilling and extraction equipment, and an old wooden derrick. The site showcases both the laboratory and the technology used to extract oil.

The post mill in the Uetze district of Hänigsen was built in 1704. It opens to visitors on the annual Mill Day, held on the first Sunday in September. Check the event date before your trip. The two-post Kübbung house can be visited by prior arrangement with the Uetze local history association.

The historic sites offer different points of interest: the tar pits focus on oil deposits and extraction technology, while the post mill’s year of construction provides a specific historical reference. The Kübbung house adds another visit to the list, which must be arranged in advance with the local history association.

Seasonal leisure activities

Erse-Park in Uetze offers a summer toboggan run, the Hara Kiri water slide, a historic carousel and a family roller coaster. The attractions operate seasonally. If a visit to the park is important for your travel dates, check its seasonal operating schedule in advance.

The activities also differ in how you need to plan your time: check current bathing conditions before swimming; rental options and park attractions are seasonal. For a visit to the post mill, the annual Mill Day is key, while the Kübbung house requires advance arrangements. Coordinate these activities with your travel dates if you want them to be a key part of your stay.
