Ronnenberg’s landscape stretches between Benther Berg and the Ihme lowlands. Fields, meadows, small woods and avenues shape the area. If you like to spend your time outdoors, you’ll find opportunities for hiking and cycling, as well as cultural and historical sights in the town.

Landscape, Cycling Routes and Outdoor Activities

The regional Green Ring cycling route passes through Ronnenberg. The Ronnenberg–Gehrden loop of the Green Ring is 20 kilometres long.

If you prefer to plan your route around different themes, you can use the “Ronnenberg Tour” route guide to put together individual cycling and hiking routes to cultural, historical and natural points of interest in Ronnenberg. The Ronnenberg–Gehrden loop is a named cycling route, while the route guide lets you plan your own connections between interests and destinations.

Benther Berg offers opportunities for hiking, jogging, cycling and horse riding. So, in addition to cycling routes, there are other outdoor activities to choose from. The landscape—from open fields and meadows to small woods and avenues—gives the area its distinctive character.

Mining and Everyday History at the Local History Museum

The Ronnenberg Local History Museum is housed in a former farmhouse in the town centre. Its collection focuses primarily on regional potash mining. Other exhibition areas illustrate different aspects of everyday life in the past: visitors can see a complete 1950s kitchen with historic household items. A classroom with wooden benches and a blackboard evokes schooling in earlier times.

In the attic, tools and fully equipped workshops illustrate crafts and farming in Ronnenberg’s recent past. There is also a largely original parlour from the late 19th century. It comes from the household of a wealthy Calenberg farming family. The kitchen, classroom, workshops and parlour each offer a different perspective, spanning home and school life, crafts and farming, and the living conditions of a wealthy family.

The museum also covers the history of Jewish residents up to the November Pogrom of 1938. It also explores the fate of forced labourers and refugees in former camps. These topics add a sombre chapter of local history to the accounts of everyday life and work.

Church Architecture and Historic Routes

St. Michael’s Church combines several architectural styles that emerged through numerous changes over the centuries. Its oldest parts probably date from the 12th century. The Boniface Portal originally belonged to an older chapel and is now part of the church. Its early medieval stylistic features are considered unique in Lower Saxony.

Routes and history also meet south of the Ronnenberg potash heap: there, the Green Ring runs along the Helweg up de Sandforde, a historically significant medieval field path. The path was connected with the dioceses of Minden and Hildesheim. The Ronnenberg potash heap is visible from far away and serves as a landmark in the landscape.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

You can reach the Empelde potash heap by taking tram line 9 to the Empelde terminus; from there, it’s about a ten-minute walk. Empelde S-Bahn station is about two kilometres from the heap. Bicycle stands are located near the entrance. Check the current timetable and the condition of the bicycle stands before travelling.
