History and culture in Vöhl

The former Vöhl Synagogue stands in the center of Vöhl. This simple half-timbered building was constructed in 1827 and inaugurated in 1829. The building serves as a venue for concerts, lectures and memorial events. Architectural history and cultural use therefore coexist in one place; you can plan around individual events according to their scheduled dates.

The history of Hessenstein Castle also stretches back a long way: it was built in the 14th century along the medieval trade route from Frankfurt to Hamburg. In 1922, it became the first youth hostel in Hesse.

Hiking, nature watching and cycling

The municipality of Vöhl offers almost 50 signposted hiking trails. The long-distance Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig trails also run through the area. This means there are local hiking trails as well as two specifically named long-distance trails. As routes and signage can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.

The bat nature trail in Vöhl-Asel has interactive stations and clearly signposted information. The trail includes a bat exhibition in an old transformer station. Infrared cameras provide live views into a maternity roost. In the evening, you can observe bats there using a bat detector and night-vision device. Prior registration with the hunting authority is required. As the availability of the equipment may vary, check before your visit.

The Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel is 60 meters long and has four arches. It is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder Valley. When the water level of Lake Edersee falls, it is the first structure to reappear; its visibility therefore depends on the water level.

For cycling trips, a four-star certified quality cycling route runs along the Eder through the Vöhl municipal area, starting at Ederbringhausen. The route passes green meadows and fields. Alongside the hiking trails, this adds a designated cycling route through a riverside landscape. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Swimming and more places to visit in Waldeck-Frankenberg

The Marienhagen outdoor pool has a heated swimming pool measuring 10 × 25 meters. There are separate areas for non-swimmers and swimmers, as well as an additional lane reserved for swimmers. If you would like to include the pool in your travel plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg offers more options for planning your trip. The 66-kilometer Urwaldsteig Edersee can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike. Each stage of this hike is around 22 kilometers long. The Kellerwald National Park Center in Vöhl-Herzhausen on Lake Edersee offers an interactive exhibition with exhibits about the wilderness of the Kellerwald, as well as a 4D sensory film about the wilderness and its wildlife.

The GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach showcases the landscape and wildlife around Korbach as they were 250 million years ago. Another exhibition covers the extraction and processing of limestone, as well as its industrial use in the quarry for more than 100 years. In Frankenberg (Eder), the Historic Town Hall is a half-timbered building dating from 1509. Its ten towers represent the town’s ten guilds. The weekly farmers’ market takes place every Saturday in the town hall’s covered market area; check the current date before travelling.

The Allendorf (Eder) multi-generational park covers an area of approximately 3,000 square meters and has 28 stations for activities and communication across generations. The park also contains the “Im Ried” dirt bike facility, with trails of varying difficulty levels and a pump track. The facility opened in October 2017. The wider destination of Waldeck-Frankenberg therefore offers both a place for activity and social interaction and a facility for cycling sports.
