Marienhagen offers two different ways to explore its history and surroundings: the church, with its long past, and the Planet Trail, which begins in the village and runs via Vöhl to Basdorf. Frankenkirche, whose historical interpretation is partly uncertain, is also nearby. You can choose between sacred history, a wooded historic site and a themed hiking route.

The Church in Marienhagen

The church in Marienhagen was formerly known as St. Mary’s and was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. It can be visited at any time; you can obtain the key from the sexton, church council or parish office. If you would like to see the interior, be sure to plan for collecting the key from one of these locations.

Frankenkirche near Marienhagen

Frankenkirche is located near Marienhagen. This wooded site is associated with an early hilltop church from the period of Christianization, though this historical interpretation is partly uncertain. Visitors may enter and visit the site, but access is subject to private property rights. From there, you can enjoy views across the surrounding region. The woodland, the views and the cautiously recounted early history give this visit a different focus from the church in Marienhagen.

Planet Trail via Vöhl to Basdorf

The themed trail begins in Marienhagen and runs via Vöhl to Basdorf. The route is approximately 6 km long and is considered easy. Stations along the way explain the solar system, while regional viewpoints add views of the surrounding area. Trail conditions can vary, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting out.

The bat educational trail in Vöhl-Asel features interactive stations and clearly signposted information. An exhibition in an old transformer station complements the trail. Infrared cameras provide live views into a maternity roost. Since the technology’s availability may vary, check its current status before your visit.

In addition to the long-distance Kellerwaldsteig and Urwaldsteig trails, the municipality of Vöhl offers almost 50 signposted hiking trails. Routes and their signage may change, so it is worth checking the latest information on your chosen trail before setting out.

Another landmark in the wider destination of Vöhl is the Eder Bridge near Alt-Asel. It is 60 meters long, has four arches and is considered the best-preserved structure in the old Eder Valley. As the water level of Lake Edersee drops, it is the first structure to reappear; when it can be seen therefore depends on the water level.
