Harbshausen borders the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park directly; the Himmelsbreite National Park entrance is near Harbshausen. From there, a wheelchair-accessible route leads to the Hagenstein viewpoint, and several hiking trails lead to different destinations. Nearby, Lake Edersee offers opportunities for swimming and surfing; Harbshausen’s chapel is part of the village’s history. When planning, you can therefore weigh nature trails, lake activities, and history according to your interests.

National Park Access and Hiking Trails

From the Himmelsbreite entrance, a wheelchair-accessible route leads to the Hagenstein viewpoint, 1.2 km away. This is a one-way section. As trail conditions can change, check them before your visit.

The approximately 5.5 km H 1 trail starts at Himmelsbreite, passes through the wildlife enclosure to Hagenstein, descends to Kirchlotheim, and returns via the Schulpfad trail. The approximately 5 km H 3 heads in a different direction: from Himmelsbreite, turn left before the wildlife enclosure and follow the Breitenbach Valley to the lake, then return via the lakeside road.

The approximately 7 km H 4 follows the Edersee shore road toward Asel, turns right at a sand pit, and leads through the ravine to Bettelkopf and back. The approximately 4.5 km H 5 follows the Schulpfad trail to the Ederpfad trail; the return route is via the road between Herzhausen and Harbshausen.

Approximate trail lengths range from 4.5 km for H 5 to about 7 km for H 4; H 3 is about 5 km and H 1 about 5.5 km. The destinations also differ: H 1 leads to Hagenstein, H 3 to the lake, H 4 to Bettelkopf, and H 5 to the Ederpfad trail. Length and route thus provide two concrete points of reference for choosing a trail.

The Chapel’s Construction History

Harbshausen’s chapel was built in 1570. Because it had fallen into disrepair, a complete rebuilding began in 1720; it was completed in 1721, and the interior fittings were finished in 1726. The dates distinguish two building phases: the original construction of the chapel and its later rebuilding. The interior fittings were completed after the rebuilding was finished.
