Volkmarsen: Landmarks, history and leisure

Volkmarsen combines a historic landmark with a museum dedicated to history and agriculture, as well as opportunities for exercise and leisure. These attractions offer different highlights: Kugelsburg Castle combines panoramic views with a medieval atmosphere, the museum displays equipment and archaeological finds, and the circular trails pass through a scenic area. When planning a stay, you can choose to focus on culture, hiking or leisure activities.

Kugelsburg Castle: Views and the Middle Ages

Kugelsburg Castle was built around the year 1200 and is one of Volkmarsen’s landmarks. Today it serves as a viewing platform: From the round tower, you can look out over Volkmarsen and the surrounding area; a free telescope adds to the view. The so-called Witches’ Cellar gives visitors an impression of the Middle Ages. Two perspectives come together at Kugelsburg Castle: views across the town and its surroundings, and the historical interpretation of the Witches’ Cellar.

History at the museum

The Volkmarsen History and Agriculture Museum collects old agricultural machinery, household appliances and tools. You can also view archaeological finds from the early Middle Ages that originate from the Volkmarsen municipal area. The collection therefore spans objects from agriculture, household life and crafts, as well as early archaeological finds. The museum offers a different focus from Kugelsburg Castle: here, the emphasis is on collection pieces and finds, while the castle highlights landmarks, views and the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Circular trails and leisure facilities

Volkmarsen has circular hiking trails through a scenic area, up to 12 kilometers long. The Twiste Cycle Path is also one of the cycling routes around Volkmarsen. This gives you the option of planning hiking and cycling as different ways to enjoy outdoor activities, without combining them into a single route.

Volkmarsen’s Burgschwimmbad has a 60-meter water slide. It operates seasonally, so check before traveling whether the dates of your stay fall within the operating period. Visitors can sample fresh spring water at the Sauerbrunnen. The leisure complex at the Sauerbrunnen also includes an adventure playground. Alongside its cultural attractions and trails, Volkmarsen offers a range of leisure activities, each with its own focus.

A longer hiking option in Waldeck-Frankenberg

In the broader Waldeck-Frankenberg destination, the 66-kilometer Urwaldsteig Edersee offers a longer hiking option. The route can be completed in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike, with each stage covering around 22 kilometers. Compared with Volkmarsen’s circular hiking trails, which are up to 12 kilometers long, this regional option differs both in total distance and in its stages. This lets you choose between a local circular walk and a multi-day hiking plan in the wider Waldeck-Frankenberg area.
