Battenberg (Eder): Nature, Mining and History
Accommodation in Battenberg
Battenberg (Eder) combines nature along the Eder with mining history, scenic views and traces of local history. When planning your trip, you can choose from floodplain landscapes, cross-country skiing in winter, an underground visit and historic sites, depending on your interests.
Nature Along the Eder and Winter in Dodenau
The Eder floodplain between Dodenau and Battenberg is extensive, partly protected and home to a wide variety of animal and plant species. Fishing is also possible on the Eder between the two places; local conditions may vary. In the Battenberg district of Dodenau, groomed cross-country ski trails are available in winter. As this is a seasonal offering, check before your trip whether the trails will be open on your travel dates. The floodplain landscape, fishing and cross-country skiing offer different experiences: the trails are specifically a winter activity, while the river offers another option for fishing.
Mining History and Views from Burgberg
The Burgbergstollen visitor mine is on the slope of Burgberg and is a five-minute walk from Battenberg Market Square. The 150-year-old tunnels and shafts can be explored wearing protective clothing and a miner’s lamp, accompanied by experienced mine guides. Opening times may change, so check in advance for current tour availability.
Kellerburg can only be reached on foot; several hiking trails lead to Kellerburg Tower on Battenberg’s Burgberg. The tower’s viewing platform is reached via 88 steps. In good weather, the view extends as far as the Marburg Lahnberge, Kahler Asten and Hoher Lohr. When planning your visit, take into account both the walk and the climb up the steps.
Neuburg, Baroque Garden and Local History
Neuburg in Battenberg (Eder) was built in 1732 by chief forester Karl Johann Philipp Löner von Laurenburg and served as Landgrave Ludwig VIII’s hunting lodge until 1768. The Baroque garden at Neuburg covers around 2,700 square metres and is laid out across several terraces. The building’s former use and the garden’s design offer two distinct aspects of this historic site.
The Laisa Local History Museum focuses on a different subject: it illustrates village life in the last quarter of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It focuses on the crafts practised in Laisa around the turn of the century. Laisa is a district of Battenberg. The historic walk through Battenberg is free of charge; donations are welcome. Check the latest information on whether it is taking place before setting out.
More Activities and Travel Planning
The Battenberg (Eder) hang-gliding site is a launch site for hang-glider and paraglider pilots, with views across the Eder Valley. It adds an aviation-sports option to the selection, while the historic walk and the buildings mentioned above focus on local history.
Regular bus services connect Battenberg with the railway stations in Frankenberg and MĂĽnchhausen, as well as with other municipalities. If you are planning to travel by bus and train, check the latest timetables for your travel day in advance.
In the wider Waldeck-Frankenberg destination
The wider Waldeck-Frankenberg destination also offers nature and hiking experiences. The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. The 66-kilometre Urwaldsteig Edersee trail can be walked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-guided hike; on this hike, each stage covers around 22 kilometres. These are two different ways to divide up a longer hike: several stages, or three days as part of the ranger-guided hike.
