Dodenau: Wildlife Enclosure, Eder Floodplain and Winter Cross-Country Ski Trails
Accommodation in Dodenau
Dodenau combines nature experiences with outdoor activities. Options include a heated outdoor swimming pool and a wildlife enclosure; in winter, groomed cross-country ski trails are also available. The Eder connects Dodenau with Battenberg through a wide floodplain. This gives trip planning several different focuses: wildlife watching, river scenery and a distinctly seasonal winter sports offering.
Wildlife Enclosure, Outdoor Pool and Ski Trails
The heated outdoor pool offers a place to swim, while the groomed trails are intended for cross-country skiing in winter. The facilities and activities therefore also vary by season. Opening and operating conditions may vary; check the specific arrangements before your visit. It is also worth checking trail conditions during your planned stay.
The wildlife enclosure in Dodenau covers more than ten hectares. Visitors can observe fallow deer, red deer and mouflon at close range. The size of the enclosure and the different animal species give a visit a different focus from swimming or cross-country skiing. As is to be expected, how easily individual animals can be seen may vary.
Eder Scenery and Trails in the Battenberg-Dodenau Area
The Eder connects Dodenau and Battenberg through an extensive floodplain, which is partly protected and characterised by its variety of plants and animals. The area can be enjoyed in different ways: on foot, while fishing or cycling, or by boat or swimming. Water conditions and local permits may affect the specific activities available. When planning your activities, distinguish between the possibilities offered by the river landscape and the conditions at each location.
The marked hiking trail network in the Battenberg-Dodenau area covers a total of 130 kilometres. Some routes pass through nature reserves; this figure describes the trail network in the wider area, not a single route. Mountain biking is also possible. For hikes, you can use the network’s length and trail markings as a guide; conditions on individual trails may change.
When choosing your travel dates, the difference between the activities is clear: the groomed ski trails are explicitly a winter offering, while the floodplain, wildlife enclosure and hiking trails provide other focuses for trip planning. Check the conditions at each facility or for each activity before planning your stay around it.
More Destinations in the Wider Battenberg (Eder) Destination
There are also attractions in the wider Battenberg (Eder) destination in their own right. The Burgbergstollen visitor mine lies on the slope of Burgberg and is a five-minute walk from Battenberg’s market square. The 150-year-old tunnels and shafts can be visited with protective clothing and a miner’s lamp, accompanied by experienced mine guides. Opening hours may change; check current visitor arrangements before your visit.
In Battenberg (Eder), the Baroque garden at Neuburg covers around 2,700 square metres and is divided into several terraces. Neuburg was built in 1732 by chief forester Karl Johann Philipp Löner von Laurenburg and served as Landgrave Ludwig VIII’s hunting lodge until 1768. The garden and the building’s history offer different points of interest for a visit to the wider destination.
Kellerburg can only be reached on foot; several hiking trails lead to the Kellerburg Tower on Battenberg’s Burgberg. You can reach the viewing platform via 88 steps. In good weather, the view extends as far as the Marburg Lahn Hills, Kahler Asten and Hoher Lohr. Regular bus services connect Battenberg with the railway stations in Frankenberg and Münchhausen, as well as with other municipalities. Check the timetables for your travel dates.
