Explore Rödermark via trails that highlight nature, local history and art. When planning your stay, you can choose from several options: the Rodau nature trail runs between Urberach and Ober-Roden, while the “Oane Wesch” cultural and history trail features QR-code signs. The wumboR cycling loop offers a different focus, with public art and a point of reference at the 50th parallel. The trails offer different ways to experience Rödermark and vary in their themes and focus.

The Rodau: Nature and History

The Rodau nature trail is just under six kilometres long and has 29 signs. It begins at the spring that flows year-round by the Rodauquelle playground in Urberach and ends near the wastewater treatment plant in Ober-Roden. Twelve signs cover nature in, along and around the Rodau, including conservation successes as well as fish, small animals, birds and plants. Alongside the course of the waterway, the trail also draws attention to its surroundings and their diverse natural features.

The trail also brings the Rodau’s historical changes to life. Topics include the four former mills on its banks and earlier stream courses, its realignment in the 1930s, and the renaturalisation that began in 2009. Nature observation and the history of the waterway are closely connected here: the signs focus both on habitats along the Rodau and on the changes the river has undergone over time.

Cultural Trail and Public Art

The “Oane Wesch” cultural and history trail has 56 stops with QR-code signs. The texts can be accessed and listened to on a mobile phone. This gives the trail a different focus from the Rodau nature trail: rather than nature and waterway development, culture and history take centre stage, and the stop texts are designed to be read and listened to.

The wumboR cycling loop also combines orientation with art and notable landmarks. Near Waldacker, it crosses the 50th parallel; columns display photos of cities along that parallel. On the Bulau, the route passes the “Celtic Funeral Procession,” a steel sculpture by artist Kai Wujanz. The Bulau is also home to a recreated section of a Roman road at the highest point of the route. The wumboR cycling loop also passes the “Braaret Bernsche” and two features of the Regional Park Route.

You can encounter art in Rödermark beyond the cycling loop, too. There are 22 sculptures in the town’s districts, standing in busy squares or at intersections. These works complement the two specific sites on the Bulau with public art in other parts of the town’s districts.

More ways to explore the wider Offenbach destination

The wider Offenbach destination also offers longer cycling and hiking routes. The 190-kilometre Regional Park Circular Route connects orchards and wetlands with artworks, historic sites, viewpoints and play areas. Sections can be explored on foot or by bike. The Main Cycle Route follows the Main from its source to its mouth through the landscapes of Franconia and Hesse; it takes a varied course away from heavy traffic and is signposted to a high standard. These routes offer another perspective on the wider Offenbach destination, while the trails and art locations described above highlight Rödermark’s own attractions.
