Hirschhorn (Neckar) can be explored for trip planning through two main themes: historic sites with specific architectural and commemorative details, and cycling routes that include Hirschhorn. If you are looking for a hotel, this distinction can help you decide whether you would rather spend your time exploring the castle and chapel’s history or cycling. The sites and routes below offer different ways to do so.

Castle History and Architectural Styles

Hirschhorn Castle was built in the mid-13th century. The surviving window remains show the difference between Romanesque rounded arches and Gothic pointed arches. These two styles offer a tangible way to explore the building’s history: rather than looking only at the castle’s age, you can also pay attention to its different architectural details. The recently restored castle chapel at Hirschhorn Castle is a venue for civil wedding ceremonies.

Ersheim and Its Chapel

Ersheim was first mentioned in a document in 773, when it was given to Lorsch Abbey, and is Hirschhorn’s oldest district. The Ersheim Chapel contains several notable historical features: frescoes adorn the central nave, the chapel’s oldest part, which dates to around 1355. The chapel also contains medieval tombs of the Knights of Hirschhorn. Other sights include a Late Gothic depiction of the Mount of Olives with figures and the Elendstein, a funeral lantern donated in 1412. These details refer to different periods and objects: the documentary mention concerns Ersheim, the date around 1355 refers to the oldest part of the chapel, and 1412 is the year the Elendstein was donated.

The chapel’s story also includes a seasonal aspect of nature. In summer, around 800 female greater mouse-eared bats raise their young beneath its roof timbers; the number may vary. The frescoes, tombs and funeral lantern tell the story of the site, while the bats add a seasonal point of interest.

Historic Traces, Concerts and a Museum

High-water marks can be seen at various points on Hirschhorn’s town walls and on the houses behind them. They make flooding visible as part of the town’s history at several specific locations. Concerts are regularly held in the Carmelite monastery church and in the monastery courtyard and chapter house. Most of the proceeds go toward preserving the monastery church. The Langbein Museum is another cultural attraction in the town and has received multiple awards.

Cycling Routes Compared

Two different route descriptions are relevant for a cycling trip. The ADFC awarded the Neckar Valley Cycle Route four stars for the 77-kilometre stretch from Neckargemünd via Hirschhorn to Bad Wimpfen. As the award status may change, it is worth checking the latest information when planning your trip. The 410-kilometre Castle Road Cycle Route runs from Mannheim via Hirschhorn to Bayreuth. The distances given therefore describe two different route sections: one between Neckargemünd and Bad Wimpfen, and the longer route from Mannheim to Bayreuth. This makes it easier to decide which of the two routes described better suits the scale of your planned trip.
