Heppenheim (Bergstraße) brings together a protected historic old town, historical sights and paths through the vineyards. Nature and outdoor activities are also part of the town’s character. When looking for a hotel, you can choose from a range of themes to shape your stay: local history, wine, walking trails or outdoor activities.

Discover the Old Town and Its History

Half-timbered houses define the look of the historic old town. Many of Heppenheim’s more than 400 protected cultural monuments are located here. Those interested in architectural history and art can also explore several periods at the Heppenheim Museum: it is housed in the historic Kurmainzer Amtshof, whose earliest construction phases date back to the 13th or 14th century. In the central building, the museum presents a permanent exhibition on the town’s history.

The oldest part of the complex, known as the Saalbau, houses the Kurfürstensaal, with Gothic angel frescoes and Renaissance murals. The museum thus connects the town’s history with specific examples of historic interiors and art. Another prominent landmark is Starkenburg Castle. Lorsch Abbey built it in 1065 as a protective castle on the 295-metre-high Schlossberg. It is one of the oldest castles in the western Odenwald.

You can also encounter history in Heppenheim by exploring the old town at your own pace: along the Lantern Trail, more than 150 silhouette cutouts on the old town’s lanterns depict Hessian legends. Visitors can explore the route independently. If you prefer a guided tour, you can choose from the themed tours offered by the Tourist Information Office. They are available in the historic old town, at Starkenburg Castle, in the vineyards and along the Lantern Trail. Check the dates and booking arrangements in advance.

Trails with Different Themes

The “Wein & Stein” discovery trail runs through Heppenheim’s vineyards, is 6.9 kilometres long and features around 70 information stations. The Planet Trail has a different focus: it runs for about two kilometres from the Tourist Information Office to the Starkenburg Observatory. Thirteen bilingual signs along the way provide information about planets, minor planets, comets and the Milky Way. The two trails therefore differ in focus, with the vineyards and their related information on one hand and astronomical topics on the other.

If you’re looking for exercise and relaxation in nature, the Bruchsee local recreation area lies south of Heppenheim. Walking paths offer opportunities for jogging and unwinding; there is also an outdoor fitness circuit and a trim trail. Children can explore the educational trail in the orchard meadow at Bruchsee with an apple-thief quiz. This recreation area therefore offers both opportunities for exercise and an activity to explore.

At the multi-purpose lawn on Erbachwiesenweg, there is a sports equipment box where you can borrow play and sports equipment using an iOS or Android app. As app availability may vary, it is worth checking shortly before your visit. Heppenheim station is served by buses and trains in the VRN network. Check the latest connections for your specific travel dates.

Wine as Part of Your Stay

Heppenheim has 180 hectares of vineyards and is the largest wine town on the Bergstraße. Wine is a feature not only of the “Wein & Stein” discovery trail, but also of the Bergstraße Vineyard Hike, which can start in Heppenheim. It includes six tasting stands serving wines, sparkling wines and Seccos from the Hessische Bergstraße. As information about the current edition is important for travel planning, check the event details in effect at the time of your visit.

When choosing a hotel, consider which of these themes matters most to you during your stay: the half-timbered old town and its historic sites, a themed route or outdoor exercise. The activities described differ in content and scope, so a visit to Heppenheim cannot be reduced to just one kind of experience.
