Wald-Michelbach is located in the Überwald area of the southern Odenwald and in the Bergstraße-Odenwald Nature Park. The landscape is shaped by wooded ridges and valleys crossed by small streams. The town’s character is also defined by well-marked hiking trails, cycling routes, the Waldschwimmbad outdoor pool and its links to mining history. Visitors can therefore plan a stay around a range of interests: nature and landscape, outdoor activities, swimming and local history.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Wald-Michelbach offers well-marked hiking trails. In Aschbach, one of the municipality’s districts, there is an ecological nature trail and a Geo-Nature Park information center. These specific attractions bring the nature theme to life: the trail focuses on ecology, while the information center is dedicated to the Geo-Nature Park.

The Accessible Nature Experience trail in Wald-Michelbach runs for 3.3 kilometers along a former railway line between Unter-Wald-Michelbach and Affolterbach. It provides largely barrier-free access to nature and the landscape. Its route along the former railway and its explicitly largely barrier-free character are two important features of this trail.

Another option is the circular route of the Tromm Geocenter: stretching over 22 kilometers, it connects the Geocenter’s stations and is signposted in both directions. If you sort routes by length, you can compare the 3.3-kilometer former railway trail with a 22-kilometer circuit. These two routes offer different options when planning your outing.

Cycling and Exploring Routes

Cycling routes have their own distinctive features, too. The Weschnitztal-Überwald Cycle Route is signposted throughout; after climbing to Kreidacher Höhe, it reaches the Überwald. The route description thus combines a specific landmark—the climb to Kreidacher Höhe—with the transition into the Überwald.

Another option is the solar-powered rail trolley. It travels around 10 kilometers between Mörlenbach and Wald-Michelbach along the former Überwaldbahn railway line. The journey crosses three large viaducts and passes through two tunnels. This experience is clearly different from the hiking and cycling routes: here, the former railway line and its structures shape the route between the two towns.

Mining and Local History

The Überwald Museum is housed in Wald-Michelbach’s historic half-timbered town hall, which bears the date 1594. Its exhibitions offer a glimpse into the region’s working life in the past and showcase various traditional crafts. A separate section focuses on mining in the Überwald and covers iron ore, manganese and baryte.

The Grube Ludwig visitor mine preserves an important industrial monument from the peak of mining in the Überwald. The museum and the mine have different focuses: the museum highlights working life, traditional crafts and mineral resources, while the mine represents the preserved industrial monument. Those interested in mining history will find several specific themes connected to Wald-Michelbach and the Überwald.

The Waldschwimmbad Outdoor Pool

The Waldschwimmbad adds another leisure option to the hiking trails, cycling routes and historical attractions. It has a 25-by-16-meter swimming pool and a diving pool. The non-swimmers’ pool features a 55-meter water slide. The pools and their dimensions provide a specific overview of the facilities.

The different attractions can be considered side by side when choosing Wald-Michelbach as a destination: trails through nature and landscapes, cycling routes with different features, attractions related to mining history and the Waldschwimmbad outdoor pool. Which ones suit your stay depends on whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors, learn about the region’s working history or go swimming.
