Lindenfels: Castle, Hiking Trails and Town History
Accommodation in Lindenfels
In Lindenfels, castle and town history meet hiking trails and nature attractions. The Castle and Costume Festival adds living regional traditions to these highlights. When planning your trip, the specific attractions and trails are just as important as the latest notice about the museum closure.
Lindenfels Castle and Town Walk
You can reach Lindenfels Castle via the B 47, the Nibelungenstraße. The Burgstraße car park is below the castle and can be reached by following the signs for “Stadtmitte” (town center). From there, it takes about five to ten minutes to walk to the castle. As parking options may change, it is worth checking shortly before setting off.
The castle’s history includes two distinct phases of expansion: in the 14th century, the castle was extended by the construction of the town wall; in the 15th century, the Romanesque central castle was expanded into a fortress. The historic town walk takes you to traces of the past, including the origins of the castle and its nearly 600 years as part of the Electoral Palatinate. You can also take the walk as a guided tour; dates may vary.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
The certified Li 6 adventure hiking trail runs from Lindenfels down the valley to Schlierbach, along the Gerichtspfad to Winkel, through the Buch forest to Schenkenberg, and then back to the starting point below the castle. Its description therefore lists a series of places and trail sections, ending at the starting point. Check the latest local trail information before setting out.
The Lindenfels Insect Educational Trail has a different focus: its eleven stations use information boards to explain the habitats of particularly endangered insects and plantings that support insects, including orchards and flowering woodland plants. It opened on July 29, 2020, and is located on the Panoramaweg in Schenkenberg Forest, between Hohl, above Café Zur Ludwigshöhe, and Schenkenbergstraße. While Li 6 describes a route across several named sections, this trail focuses on educating visitors about insects and plantings.
Festival and Town History
The Lindenfels Castle and Costume Festival has been celebrated since 1904. It supports the preservation and celebration of regional cultural heritage, particularly Odenwald costume and festival traditions. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific date before booking your hotel.
The Lindenfels Museum opened in 1979 in the former tithe barn in the town hall courtyard at Burgstraße 39. Its collections cover town history, folklore, agriculture, crafts, and printing. The museum also houses a restored stagecoach, probably built around 1890, which takes part in the Castle and Costume Festival parade every year in early August. Due to renovation work, the museum is expected to remain closed until spring 2027. If a visit is important to your trip, check the latest status in advance.
Garden and Refreshments at the Castle
The medicinal herb garden lies in the outer castle grounds, surrounded by historic walls from the outer defensive rings. Many medicinal plants put on a profusion of blooms in summer; most of the plants are from the region. The garden offers another connection with nature right in the historic castle grounds, while the Insect Educational Trail focuses on the habitats of endangered insects and plantings that support them.
Info.Punkt.Burg Lindenfels was established as tourist infrastructure and to help visitors find their way, particularly hikers on the Nibelungensteig. Since 2021, an information center run by the UNESCO Global Geopark and the town of Lindenfels has been housed in an old half-timbered building at the castle. The Burgschänke, located right by the castle in the Geopark information center, serves Odenwald-style home cooking, cakes, and hot and cold drinks. It is open seasonally, so take this into account when planning your day.
Getting There by Bus
Lindenfels can be reached directly from Bensheim railway station on Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar bus route 665, which runs between Bensheim and Reichelsheim. Bus route 666 connects Lindenfels with Fürth and Neunkirchen. Routes and timetables may change, so it is worth checking the latest connections before you set off.
During your stay, you can choose between castle and town history, the hiking trails described here, and nature attractions. If you are traveling by bus, factor the timetables into your day’s plans; for the museum, a guided tour, or seasonal refreshments, it is worth checking the latest information.
