Eisenhüttenstadt combines a distinctive planned-city layout with art, a museum and opportunities for cycling trips. When choosing a hotel for your stay, you can focus on what suits your plans: local history and art lead to the Municipal Museum and public spaces; a guided city tour or a ride in a Trabant offers another way to explore. For cyclists, the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route is a long-distance route of note. The facilities at the Insel recreation area and the district of Fürstenberg (Oder) also complement a visit to the city.

Museum, Art and Local History

The Eisenhüttenstadt Municipal Museum comprises three departments. Its gallery displays art from the GDR in the genres of painting, graphic art and small sculpture. It also features an authentic historical shoemaker’s workshop from around the turn of the 20th century. The museum thus brings together different subjects: artistic works from the GDR and an illustrative display of a traditional craft. The museum also displays objects and documents related to traditional basket weaving in Fürstenberg (Oder).

Art is also a tangible part of exploring the city beyond the museum. Eisenhüttenstadt’s public spaces feature more than 120 sculptures, three-dimensional artworks and murals. Their variety and different forms make public art a subject in its own right, alongside the exhibitions.

Fürstenberg (Oder), a district incorporated into Eisenhüttenstadt, adds a historic town centre to the city’s cultural character. There you will find a Gothic parish church and restored historic houses; the well-preserved old town centre is ideal for a stroll.

Explore the City Your Way

The tourist information office can arrange a customised city tour. A ride in a Trabant offers a different way to explore the designated historic monument; check availability and booking conditions before your trip.

Cycling and the Surrounding Area

Eisenhüttenstadt is located directly on the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route, which runs from the source of the Oder in the Czech Republic to the Baltic Sea. You can use rental bikes to explore the planned city; check their availability before you arrive. Cycle paths along the Friedrich-Wilhelm Canal also take you to the nearby Schlaubetal valley. When planning your cycling, you can choose between exploring the planned city and taking a tour of the surrounding area.

Nearby, the Oder landscape and the Schlaubetal offer striking scenery as well as opportunities to rest and unwind. This natural setting offers a contrast to exploring the city’s museum, public art and planned layout.

Leisure and Getting There

The Insel recreation area adds further leisure activities to a museum and cycling itinerary. It includes extensive meadows and woodland, as well as an indoor swimming pool, a skate park and playgrounds. Insel is also home to a small animal park with enclosures for donkeys, goats and other animals. Natural areas and various leisure facilities therefore offer a different focus from local history and art.

You can reach Eisenhüttenstadt by RE1 train and via the A12. As transport connections may change, check your route before travelling.
