Fürstenwalde/Spree: Cathedral, Culture and Wildlife
Accommodation in Fürstenwalde/Spree
Fürstenwalde/Spree offers different perspectives on the city: the cathedral as a landmark visible from afar, places steeped in the city’s history and cultural heritage, green spaces in the historic center, and a wildlife park. The city tours also focus on different themes—from historic sights to tastings from around the world.
Cathedral, Kulturfabrik and City History
St. Mary’s Cathedral is a landmark of Fürstenwalde visible from afar; its tower is 68 meters high. Another layer of history can be found at Kulturfabrik, Fürstenwalde’s sociocultural center. It is housed in a former brewery complex built on the ruins of the medieval bishop’s castle. The history of the bishop’s castle, that of the brewery complex, and its present-day cultural use all come together here.
The Fürstenwalde City Museum presents the city’s history and culture. The Brewery Museum offers a more focused look at the history of brewing in Fürstenwalde. The rock garden in the Bürgerpark by the cathedral is also located directly in front of the Fürstenwalde Museum. Designed according to geological and museum education criteria, it complements the city history exhibits with a geological perspective. These different themes offer several ways to explore the city: its history, brewing history, or rocks.
Green Spaces and Wildlife
Fürstenwalde City Park extends its green spaces into the historic center. A fountain built in 1939 stands at the Großer Stern. The park can therefore be explored both in terms of its place in the city and through a specific landmark: its green spaces reach into the historic center, while the fountain marks a named spot within the park.
Fürstenwalde’s local wildlife park offers insights into native and exotic wildlife. It was created in 1975 from part of the city park. Today, it is home to over 300 animals from around 70 predominantly European species; the numbers of animals and species may change over time. The green spaces therefore offer two distinct themes: the park, with its grounds and fountain, and the wildlife at the local wildlife park.
City Tours with Different Themes
The Cathedral City Tour takes you to historic sights in Fürstenwalde, including St. Mary’s Cathedral, the City Museum, and the Bürgerpark. A guided city tour lasting about an hour takes you through the historic part of the city and includes the town hall and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Advance registration is required for this tour. The two descriptions provide different points of reference: the Cathedral City Tour names several sights, while the guided tour specifies an approximate duration and the need to register. Check the current details of the Cathedral City Tour in the tourism portal before your visit.
The Culinary World Tour is a city tour lasting around three hours through the historic city center. It includes small tastings from around the world and personal stories. Compared with the guided tour, which lasts about an hour, it takes longer; the formats can therefore also be distinguished by the time they require. The Culinary World Tour is not listed as a guided tour. Dates and availability may change, so it is advisable to check the latest information before your trip.
The ceramics workshop also welcomes everyone interested and adds another cultural dimension to the selection. Fürstenwalde/Spree thus offers something for a range of interests: historic buildings and museums, green spaces and wildlife, as well as tours with different themes and durations.
