Schöneiche near Berlin tells its story through several places: the old village center of Kleinschönebeck, the Former Palace Church, and the Landhof housing estate. Cultural events and Little Spreewald Park, with its themed trails, add to the picture. You can choose different themes for your stay: architectural history, events, or exploring the park on foot.

Historic Village Center and Architectural History

Schöneiche’s historic center is in Kleinschönebeck. The old linear village dates back to the settlement of the Mark Brandenburg in the first half of the 13th century. The village green of Kleinschönebeck is a protected historic monument. Two periods of construction meet at the Former Palace Church: the early Gothic fieldstone building was renovated in 1725 and extended as a Baroque, plastered structure. Since 1994, the former palace church has been used as a concert hall; the concert program may vary.

Another testament to the area’s architectural history is the Historic Roughage Barn. The two-story timber-framed building has a mansard roof, and its grain chute is still visible. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current access conditions in advance.

The Landhof housing estate adds a more recent architectural note. All its buildings were constructed from wood and clay. It is associated with a social and ecological self-help construction project, formed in 1991 by 13 young families with several children. Most of the buildings were constructed between 1994 and 1996. The history of the medieval village center and a later community building project thus represent different chapters in the area’s development.

A white stork family nests almost every year on the remains of the former palace distillery at Storchenturm. Whether it nests there in any given year may vary.

Cultural Venues and Glimpses of Everyday Life

Kulturgießerei is located in a former workshop of the Seiler art foundry and has an industrial-cultural character. Concerts and events focusing on theater, literature, music, and film are held there regularly. During opening hours, you can also visit changing exhibitions by local and visiting artists. The program and exhibitions may change; check the current opening hours and dates if you are planning a specific visit.

The municipal library also hosts reading promotion activities, introductory sessions for school classes, and author readings. The local heritage house shows what life was like in a farming household around 1800. Alongside concerts and exhibitions, the program therefore includes readings and historical glimpses into everyday life.

Trails and History at Little Spreewald Park

Little Spreewald Park covers 4.5 hectares and has a large nature playground. You can explore it on foot along trails focusing on water, art, nature education, the senses, and geology. Check the playground’s current condition before your visit.

The park’s history dates back to the 1920s, when an artificial canal landscape modeled on the Spreewald was created for boat trips. This former use and today’s themed trails offer two different ways to experience the park: exploring its origins and walking its trails.

A guided exploration of the Trail of the Senses is also available. As dates may change, check the current schedule if you would like to plan this visit.

Getting There by Tram

Tram 88 connects Berlin-Friedrichshagen S-Bahn station with Schöneiche and Rüdersdorf. The history of the Schöneiche-Rüdersdorf tram goes back to August 28, 1910, when service began between Friedrichshagen and Schöneiche/Schloss. For your journey, it is advisable to check the current timetable, as service frequency and stops may change.

If a concert, exhibition, or guided exploration is the reason for your trip, plan around the relevant program. For other interests, you can treat the local history, cultural venues, and park trails as separate themes for your stay.
