Siehdichum: Forest, Water and History
Accommodation in Siehdichum
Siehdichum brings together waterscapes, forests and traces of history. A forest walk around the historic hamlet and the surrounding waters is recommended at any time of year.
Forest and Water
Near Siehdichum, the Schlaube follows a largely natural course through the GroĂźer Treppelsee, the Hammersee and the Schinkensee. Beeches, oaks and hornbeams grow on the slopes around Siehdichum, while pines stand on the drier hilltops. Both the waters and the contrast between wooded slopes and drier heights are therefore part of the landscape.
Exploring on Foot
An approximately four-kilometre hike starts at the Siehdichum forester’s lodge and follows a path close to the shore through forests and across a wooden bridge. The approximate distance provides a guide for planning. As local trail conditions may change, it is best to check them before setting out. In the wider Oder-Spree destination, the Lesser-Promenade in Bad Saarow is shorter, at around 1.5 kilometres.
The Hammersee walk also passes the forester’s cemetery and the Siehdichum memorial stone. This adds two clearly identified places of remembrance to the natural experience. In the Schlaubetal, the Schlaubetal hiking trail is also classified as a “Quality Trail: Wanderbares Deutschland.” If this distinction is important when choosing your route, check that it is still current beforehand.
The Place Name and Historic Buildings
The name Siehdichum is associated with the phrase “Look around you here,” attributed to Abbot Gabriel Dubau. A specific historic landmark is the hunting lodge “Jäger Hauß,” built in 1746 on the steep peninsula between the Schlaube and the Hammersee.
The Siehdichum forester’s lodge is a historic complex beside the Hammersee, built between 1909 and 1922. In Rießen, within the municipality of Siehdichum, stands a listed half-timbered church with a wooden altar dating from 1627. These dates refer to different things: 1627 is the date of the altar, 1746 is when the hunting lodge was built, and 1909 to 1922 is the construction period of the forester’s lodge complex.
Wildlife Watching and Practical Planning
Kingfishers, great crested grebes and ospreys use the waters around Siehdichum to forage or court. There are also opportunities to spot kingfishers and otters on a hike starting at the Siehdichum forester’s lodge. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.
The restaurant at the Siehdichum forester’s lodge serves regional dishes. As its offerings may change, check before visiting whether the restaurant is currently open and what it serves. One route from Berlin to the forester’s lodge follows the A12 to the Müllrose exit, then continues along the L37 and Kupferhammerstraße. Check your navigation and road conditions before setting out.
