Nußdorf: Rural Character and Local History
Accommodation in Nußdorf
Nußdorf is a small, rural village with extensive woodland, moorland and meadows. The village is a good base for cycling, hiking and cultural excursions. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: the landscape, a walk to Lake Chiemsee or historic sites within the municipality. The excursion destinations are not all in the same place, so for trips in the surrounding area it is important to check where each activity starts.
Rural Surroundings and Walking Route to Lake Chiemsee
Extensive woodland, moorland and meadows shape Nußdorf’s rural character. A walking route leads from Nußdorf via Eglsee to the shore of Lake Chiemsee; the distance is about five kilometres. This approximate distance makes it possible to plan the route as a separate part of the day. Allow enough walking time to suit your pace and the rest of your day’s plans. This turns the general focus on hiking into a concrete option for a walk to the lake.
Excursions on Lake Chiemsee
For excursions on Lake Chiemsee, take the relevant starting point into account. From Chieming, the Chiemsee boats offer a round trip on the lake or a visit to Fraueninsel. Another option is the Chiemsee Ring Line: the bus circles Lake Chiemsee from spring to autumn. The boats offer a choice between a round trip and Fraueninsel, while the Ring Line circles the lake as a seasonal bus service. Before setting off on a specific excursion, check the timetables for the boats and the Ring Line, and plan your day around the journey you choose.
Cultural History in Sondermoning and Aiging
Two historical themes come together in the district of Sondermoning. The branch church houses a late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from 1480 to 1485; only a few of these have survived in Upper Bavaria. Schloss Neuamerang was also located in Sondermoning and served as the seat of a Hofmark. Count Franz Guidobald Törring zu Pertenstein purchased the Hofmark in 1694. In the mid-18th century, the castle was used as a quarry. Sacred art and the history of a former Hofmark seat, including its later use, thus stand side by side.
Aiging also has its own historical landmark: the renovated Historic Inn of Aiging dates back to 1471. It once stood on the old salt trade route from Salzburg to Augsburg and was the scene of court proceedings. Trade and law thus shape the historical significance of this building. Sondermoning is also home to a Celtic earthwork, which bears witness to the centuries-long settlement of this cultural region. These historical points of interest therefore differ both by district and by subject.
A Wider Look at Traunstein
Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger are located in the district of Traunstein. The Chiemgau Alps are home to more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 metres in elevation. The Seeoner Seen are designated nature reserves there, while Lake Waginger and Lake Tachinger are designated landscape conservation areas. This regional perspective complements the view of Nußdorf’s rural surroundings and cultural sites with the district’s lake and mountain landscapes.
