Übersee is a municipality in the district of Traunstein in Bavaria. Übersee-Feldwies lies between the southern shore of Lake Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps. The water, trails, churches and art offer different ways to spend your time here. If you’re looking for a hotel in Übersee, you could start by considering whether you’d rather spend time by the lake, explore the surrounding area on foot or by bike, or visit local cultural sites.

Swimming, Boating and the Shore

The Übersee-Feldwies lido has a natural beach about 800 metres long. The Übersee lido also has a floating beach wheelchair, which provides access across grass and gravel and into the water. If you rely on this aid, check its availability locally before your trip. The shore of Feldwieser Bay includes a large lido, Chiemseepark, cafés, restaurants, kiosks and a beach bar. Individual food and drink businesses and services may change; for a specific visit, it’s worth checking the latest information on what’s available.

Übersee has a SUP and kayak rental service with equipment for independent excursions on Lake Chiemsee. Check in advance whether the rental service and the equipment you want are available. In summer, Herrenchiemsee can be reached from Übersee by Chiemsee ferry. Check the current timetable when planning, as the ferry connection is seasonal.

Cycling Trails, Chapel Trails and Nature

For cycling, it’s useful to distinguish between two scales: the Chiemsee Circular Cycling and Hiking Trail goes all the way around the lake, while Übersee also has its own network of cycling and hiking trails. The chapel trails link 14 chapels and four churches in the municipality. You can explore them on foot or by bike, with the sacred buildings as the main focus.

A walk in the Feldwies area leads to the bird-watching tower. A free telescope there helps visitors observe the bird, fish and plant life in the Tiroler Achen Delta. Check on site that the telescope is working. The Nature Pavilion features exhibitions on nature and environmental protection, as well as mountain and nature tours. If you’re planning to visit a particular exhibition or join a tour, check the latest programme, as individual activities may change.

Churches and Art in Übersee

The parish church of St. Nicholas was built in Übersee between 1902 and 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style and is also known as the “Cathedral of the Achental”. On Westerbuchberg, the church of St. Peter and Paul preserves valuable medieval wall frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The two churches therefore offer different historical points of interest: the parish church’s Neo-Gothic construction and the medieval wall paintings on Westerbuchberg.

The Leonhardi Church in Almau is a former pilgrimage church dedicated to St. Leonhard. It is considered one of the oldest churches in the Achental. The Nikolaus Chapel stands on the Feldwieser peninsula. According to local tradition, it was built in 1808 by a resident who had been rescued from danger on Lake Chiemsee. The Exter Art House presents works by Julius Exter and Chiemsee painters, adding an artistic element to a stay otherwise focused on churches, landscapes or the lake.

Routes to Regional Places to Eat

Übersee’s Schmankerlwege connect local producers with inns and restaurants. If you’d like to include these stops in your plans, you can use the routes as a guide to places serving regional food. Individual providers may change; check the latest offerings when making specific plans.
