Unterwössen: Alpine Pastures, Wössner See and Hochgern
Accommodation in Unterwössen
There are several themes to choose from during a stay in Unterwössen: the alpine pasture world at the Alten Bad offers a glimpse into life on the mountain pastures, Wössner See combines walks with an outdoor swimming pool, and hiking routes lead to Hochgern. There is also the Achental Cycle Route and an introductory day in gliding. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider whether culture and local history, time by the water, or outdoor activities should be the focus of your stay. The walk by the lake is possible year-round, while access to the alpine pasture world depends on the Tourist Information office’s opening hours.
Alpine Pastures and Local History
The alpine pasture world at the Alten Bad in Unterwössen uses interactive displays, exhibits, and information panels to convey an impression of life on the mountain pastures. Topics include the relationship between alpine pastures and nature, as well as the biodiversity of the alpine pasture ecosystem. A virtual hay-sled ride complements the exhibition. Admission is free during the Tourist Information office’s opening hours. Check these hours before your visit.
The Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Unterwössen was built between 1780 and 1783 and extended from 1961 to 1963. Achental Tourism regularly offers tours of churches and chapels in Unterwössen. If you are planning a tour, confirm the current arrangements with the Tourist Information office.
Wössner See and Routes into the Mountains
A walk by Wössner See is possible year-round. The outdoor swimming pool at Wössner See has a sunbathing lawn, a water slide, and a children’s play area. Fishing permits are also issued at the lake. Check the local regulations before including fishing in your plans.
Hiking routes from Unterwössen lead, among other destinations, to Hochgern, which stands 1,744 metres high. In the area surrounding the destination, Hochgern can be climbed on foot or by mountain bike. Check route conditions before setting out. The Achental Cycle Route takes a different course: it follows the Tiroler Ache for a short stretch before turning into the centre of Unterwössen. The routes therefore also differ in their destinations: Hochgern is one possible destination for the hiking routes, while the cycle route section follows the river and continues into the village.
Gliding as Another Focus
The German Alpine Gliding School in Unterwössen offers an introductory day for interested visitors. Check the provider’s current schedule and booking details if you plan to take part. Unlike the year-round walk by Wössner See, the introductory day should be planned around the current dates.
