Tittmoning is located directly on the Salzach, on the border with Austria. You can choose what to focus on based on several clearly distinct themes: the historic townscape, the museums and the river landscape. The town square and town wall show the architectural scale of the historic centre; castle tours and collections offer their own cultural and historical highlights. Along the Salzach, a downstream boat trip and the floodplain circular trail are two different options. This lets you tailor your stay to the things that particularly interest you while you’re there.

Tittmoning

Town Square and Town Wall

The 298-metre-long town square is a unified historic monument ensemble, with colourful façades in the regionally distinctive Inn-Salzach style. The town wall offers a different sense of scale: it dates from the mid-13th century, is almost completely intact and encloses the town centre and castle over a length of 1,700 metres. The square and wall convey different aspects of the town’s layout: the clearly defined square with its striking façades on the one hand, and the long line of fortifications enclosing the town centre and castle on the other. If historic architecture is a key factor in choosing your trip, these features provide a tangible way to understand Tittmoning.

Museums in Tittmoning

The Rupertiwinkel Museum is located in Tittmoning Castle and comprises 23 historic exhibition rooms with original floors and ceilings from the 17th century. It displays prehistoric and early historical finds, as well as regional folk art. Its themes therefore range from early finds to regional art, while the floors and ceilings shape the historic character of the rooms. The collection also includes 130 Tittmoning shooting targets dating from 1600 to 1930.

The Tannery Museum, housed in the former Marstall of the Troadkasten, offers a different focus. It documents the history of tanning in Tittmoning and is designed to be interactive and experimental: visitors can learn by touching objects and trying things out for themselves. Unlike the exhibition rooms of the Rupertiwinkel Museum, hands-on activities are part of the format here. The museums differ both in their subject matter and in the way visitors explore them.

Castle Tours and Colloredomarkt

Public tours of Tittmoning Castle and the Rupertiwinkel Museum run from 1 May to 3 October, Thursday to Sunday at 2 pm. A tour lasts about 1.5 hours; no booking is required. Since the dates and times of the seasonal programme may change, check the latest dates and times before your visit.

The Colloredomarkt has its own schedule: since 2011, it has been held every year in April as a two-day arts and crafts market in Tittmoning’s historic castle complex. Exact market dates and exhibitors may vary, so it is worth checking the specific dates before your trip. The tour and the market offer different experiences: the tour is a seasonal event with a specified time and duration, while the market is an annual April event featuring arts and crafts.

Salzach Floodplains and Riverside Trails

The Salzach floodplain near Tittmoning is part of the FFH area 7744-371 “Salzach and Lower Inn” and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. For a stay focused on nature and the river landscape, this protected status is an additional point of interest alongside the historic buildings.

Plätten boat trips depart from the Plätten landing stage at the Tittmoning Salzach Bridge in the Salzach floodplain and travel downstream on the Salzach towards Burghausen. In Tittmoning, the floodplain circular trail runs from the same landing stage through the natural river landscape along the Salzach. These routes give you a clear distinction to consider when planning: the Plätten boat trip heads downstream towards Burghausen, while the floodplain circular trail passes through the river landscape. If you want to include a Plätten boat trip in your plans, check the latest dates in advance.

Getting There: The Railway Station

Tittmoning-Wiesmühl railway station is about 7 kilometres from the town centre and is connected by a signposted cycling route. Bear this distance in mind if you are including both the station and the town centre in your travel plans. If you are also considering train access when choosing a hotel, the distance between the station and the town centre is a practical point to factor into your stay.
