Reit im Winkl combines opportunities for active days with insights into local history and culture. Winklmoos-Alm is a skiing and hiking area as well as a district of Reit im Winkl. Other highlights include cross-country skiing, trails through nature and cultural attractions.

Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing

Winklmoos-Alm is also certified as an International Dark Sky Park. Nordic Park Reit im Winkl serves cross-country skiing enthusiasts as a place to play, train and practice. The “Bärenloipe” is the children’s trail in Nordic Park. This means that skiing and hiking at Winklmoos-Alm and cross-country skiing in Nordic Park are distinct sporting activities.

A free shuttle bus takes guests travelling to the Winklmoos-Alm/Steinplatte gondola directly to the gondola’s valley station in Seegatterl from the tourist information office and other stops in Reit im Winkl. Check the current shuttle service before setting off.

Trails, Water and Via Ferrata

The barefoot park at Grünbühel is located between the town centre and the waterfall. Its features include a water lily pond, a Kneipp pool and numerous original activity stations. This gives it a different focus from the skiing and cross-country skiing areas: water and the park’s varied stations shape what it offers.

Hausbachfall is a small landmark of Reit im Winkl. The Hausbachfall via ferrata runs along the right side of the gorge, is graded C/D and leads over ladders, step beams and a rope bridge. Conditions may vary depending on the water level; take this into account when planning your visit.

The Three Lakes area, with Weitsee, Mittersee and Lödensee, stretches between Reit im Winkl and Ruhpolding. Swimming is permitted at designated bathing areas at Weitsee; seasonal conditions apply.

Local History and Culture

The “Hausenhäusl” local history museum offers a glimpse into the life of a day labourer in Reit im Winkl just over 100 years ago. The Ski Museum shows the importance of the town and Winklmoos-Alm to skiing. The two museums therefore have different focuses: one on the life of a day labourer, the other on the importance of skiing. Both museums can only be visited as part of a guided museum hike and by prior registration.

At the local heritage evenings in the Festsaal, you can discover music, singing, dance and traditional costume. Check the local calendar for dates. The Maria-Hellwig-Weg offers a different cultural connection between the town and an individual: this leisurely walk is dedicated to Maria Hellwig, a singer and folk theatre actress from Reit im Winkl.

The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Johann im Gebirg stands on Winklmoos-Alm near Reit im Winkl. Prof. Josef Wiedemann built the modern church between 1963 and 1966. Its construction dates and description as a modern church give it a specific place in local history.
