Traunreut offers a range of themes to consider when planning your stay: Stein Castle, trails connected with the town’s history and surrounding landscape, and a cultural program that changes over time. If you are looking for a hotel in Traunreut, first consider whether a castle visit, a tour or an event will be the focus of your stay. This will help you plan your travel dates around the program items that interest you.

Stein Castle and the Cave Castle

Stein Castle on the Traun is a three-part complex comprising the upper castle, the cave or rock castle, and the still-inhabited castle. The cave castle is considered the largest and best-preserved of its kind in Germany. Its interior is accessible only with a castle guide; check the operator’s information before your trip. Tours of the cave castle can be combined with a brewery tour of the Stein Castle Brewery. Check tour availability and booking arrangements in advance.

For more than 530 years, the Stein Castle Brewery has been making beer and organic beer specialties, and it offers brewery tours. The Hermit’s Retreat is also located at Stein Castle. It is open to visitors once a year, on the Sunday of the parish fair. Check the date before planning your stay around a visit.

Town History on Foot, Landscapes Along the Trails

The Traunreut History Trail documents the transformation of the 1940s munitions factory “Muna” into the present-day town of Traunreut. It is open year-round, although seasonal conditions may vary. Tours of the history trail can be booked on request through the town hall. The 8.8 km town circuit is different: it offers impressions of the young town and the surrounding landscape.

There is also a clearly structured selection of cycling routes: the Traunreut Cycling Trail consists of five sections, ranging from 8 to 14 km in length. The routes pass through unspoiled villages and hamlets, as well as the scenic Traun Valley along the Traun River. This gives you a choice of individual stages with specified lengths and routes with different points of interest.

Traunreut is connected to the southeastern Bavarian rail network by regular services; bicycles are usually carried free of charge on regional trains. Check the current rail and bicycle carriage rules before travelling. This is particularly useful if you would like to plan your journey and a cycling tour together.

Events and Cultural Stops

The k1 Cultural and Event Center offers a varied program of more than 200 events. These include concerts, cabaret, theater performances, lectures, congresses, conferences and balls. As the program changes, check event dates before your trip. This makes it easier to plan a stay around a particular evening.

The Theaterfabrik comprises a theater café, a black box and a theater hall. It hosts concerts, films, theater, open stages and cabaret performances. Its different venues and formats offer another cultural focus alongside the k1 program.

Places with a range of themes offer further insights into Traunreut: the local history museum also documents the history of the regions of origin of Traunreut’s residents. At the town hall fountain, the bronze sculpture “Flute Player” showcases the work of Munich sculptor Marlene Neubauer-Woerner. The pilgrimage chapel of Frauenbrunn in Traunwalchen has elaborately designed altarpieces and votive panels. The Catholic church in Irsing and St. Michael’s Castle Chapel in Stein an der Traun are also considered particularly noteworthy religious buildings in the town. The Romanian Orthodox Church is an example of the town’s cultural diversity.

A special event is the Georgiritt, a traditional pilgrimage ride between Stein an der Traun and St. Georgen. Every year, thousands of spectators line the streets for the procession, where they can see decorated horses and carriages, historic costumes and traditional dress. Check the event dates before planning your stay around it.
