Schliersee can be explored through a range of interests: the approximately seven-kilometre trail around the lake focuses on walking by the water, while museums and churches showcase architectural and craft history. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether your trip will centre mainly on a walk along the shore, cultural attractions or both.

Trail around Schliersee

The trail around Schliersee is about seven kilometres long and mostly flat. Along the route, there are benches, viewpoints by the water and swimming coves. The official lakeside trail also includes a tree discovery path. The route thus combines stretches by the water with opportunities to stop along the way and enjoy the walk at your own pace.

The trail is mostly paved and easy to travel along; due to a few short uphill sections, an accompanying person is recommended. The Vitalwelt is a possible starting point. You can choose which direction to walk in from the adjacent Kurpark. As the trail and facilities may change due to maintenance work, it is advisable to check their condition before setting off.

Crafts and architectural history

The Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum Schliersee is designed as an Upper Bavarian farming village, with historic buildings faithfully reconstructed in detail. Traditional crafts such as shoemaking and blacksmithing are presented there, as is brewing beer using historical methods. Demonstrations may vary depending on the date. A visit therefore offers a look at both historic building techniques and practical crafts.

The Schliersee Local History Museum has been housed in the Schredl House since 1916; the building was constructed in the 14th century. St. Sixtus Church was built between 1712 and 1715 on the site of a medieval predecessor church. These two building histories offer different points of reference in time: the Schredl House dates back to the Middle Ages, while the present-day church is from the early 18th century.

At St. Sixtus, Johann Baptist Zimmermann created the ceiling frescoes and stucco work. The church’s furnishings also include a Throne of Mercy by Erasmus Grasser, dating from 1490. The church thus brings together works of art from different periods.

Hikes and seasonal experiences

The Schliersee Church Trio is a two-hour hike from church to church, connecting Christ Church, St. Sixtus and St. George. The tour period is listed as running from 19 February 2026 to 11 February 2027; check the latest dates before your trip. The Josefsthal Waterfalls are located near Schliersee, on the south side of the lake in the district of Neuhaus. The hike there is rated moderate, is about 2.8 kilometres long and takes around 1.5 hours. The stated duration is therefore shorter than that of the Church Trio.

There are also activities on the water at Schliersee. A local editorial article lists rowboats, pedal boats, electric boats and slide boats at the Lauber boat rental next to the Schlierseer Vitalwelt. As operations depend on the weather and offerings may change, check the current selection in advance. The motor ship Schliersee III operates on the lake from May to September; check current operations with the provider before your trip.

A date on the annual calendar can also shape your plans: the Schliersee Local History Association invites visitors to a year-end event at the Schliersee Local History Museum every year on 31 December. This means your trip planning can include both longer-term cultural and hiking activities and seasonal events.
