Rottach-Egern on Lake Tegernsee: Wallberg, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Rottach-Egern
Rottach-Egern lies on the southern shore of Lake Tegernsee, framed by an impressive mountain backdrop. The surroundings shape the views of the town, while the Malerwinkel in Egern Bay has a special cultural history: painters, poets and composers found inspiration for their works there. The lake, mountains and culture offer different ways to plan your trip—from scenic views and activities on Wallberg to events throughout the year.
Wallberg: Views, Hiking and Tobogganing
At more than 1,700 metres high, Wallberg is Lake Tegernsee’s local mountain. Options range from leisurely walks to challenging hikes. If you plan to go up the mountain, you can take the Wallbergbahn cable car: it carries visitors comfortably and safely up Wallberg, where panoramic views of Lake Tegernsee and the Alps await. Operating times may change, so check the timetable before your trip.
Wallberg is also a popular launch site for paragliders, who make use of the favourable wind conditions at Lake Tegernsee. Another special feature is the natural toboggan run: at more than six kilometres long, it is considered the longest in Germany. Its seasonal operation may vary. Hiking, paragliding and tobogganing offer very different ways to experience the mountain; which of them suits your trip also depends on the season and your own plans.
Water Activities and Museum
The See- und Warmbad Rottach-Egern has a large sports pool, a whirlpool and air-bubble loungers. For children, there are shallow pools with different water temperatures of up to 33 °C, connected by a waterslide. Play equipment and a water bell round out the facilities. If a visit to the baths is part of your plans, check the current opening hours and regulations in advance.
The Gsotthaber Hof Museum offers another way to explore the town’s history. This family museum is all about horses; children can see, hear and touch. Alongside scenery and activities, Rottach-Egern also offers cultural and sensory experiences that are distinctly different from one another.
Annual Festivals and Passion Displays
The traditional Rosstag takes place in Rottach-Egern every year on the last Sunday in August. The annual Almabtrieb, or cattle drive from the alpine pastures, follows in late autumn; exact dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates before making arrangements, as organisers may change them.
A seasonal religious experience is the Holy Sepulchre in the parish church of St. Laurentius. During Holy Week, changing Passion scenes are displayed there as life-size tableaux. As the display is tied to Holy Week, it is advisable to check before you arrive. The annual festivals and the church displays thus each provide a distinct seasonal reason to visit.
Getting There and Getting Around
Since December 2023, Rottach-Egern has been part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). One ticket can be used on all participating transport operators. As network membership and ticket rules may change, check the current conditions before travelling. The town’s attractions are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: Lake Tegernsee and the mountain backdrop shape the scenery, Wallberg brings together hiking, paragliding and tobogganing, while the baths, museum and seasonal events add further highlights.
