Thüngen combines a seasonal Japanese Garden, a German-language tour of the old town, and the Werntal Cycle Route, which runs directly through the town, as reasons to visit. When planning, the key distinction is between activities that require registration or an appointment and the cycling route.

Thüngen: Garden, Old Town, and Cycle Route

From May to September, Ruth and Horst Benkert show visitors their approximately 500 m² Japanese Garden. Its features include a pond, a stream with a waterfall, seating, and Far Eastern decorations. Bamboo and ornamental maple, along with rocks and stones, shape the garden. Registration is requested, so please arrange your visit in advance.

The German-language tours of the old town are intended for groups, including families, clubs, companies, and class reunions. They are offered by appointment, last about 90 minutes, and start at the Ludwigslinde on Planplatz. The route goes from Planplatz to St. George’s Church and through the Bangerts. Topics include historic sites and former Jewish institutions. If you would like to arrange a tour, coordinate the date with the local contact.

The castle complex in Bangerts park comprises the Burgschloss, the Spitalschloss, and the Alter Stock. The complex is privately occupied. The buildings therefore form a distinct part of the townscape, independent of the guided tour of the old town.

Another group activity is the “Herzog von Franken” whisky and beer tasting at Schlossgut Thüngen. On request, it is offered to groups of 20 or more and includes a three-course meal in the castle cellar. Arrange your preferred date directly with the provider.

For cyclists, the Werntal Cycle Route, also known as the Wern Cycle Route, runs directly through Thüngen. You can therefore consider a cycling route, a group tour that requires an appointment, and the garden, which is open seasonally, as distinct focuses for your trip.

A broader look at Main-Spessart

In the wider destination of Main-Spessart, vineyards, water, and forests come together to create an appealing holiday region. Spessart Nature Park is suitable for short walks as well as multi-day hikes. These regional landscape and hiking opportunities provide a separate context alongside the activities mentioned in Thüngen.

One specific long-distance trail in Main-Spessart is the Main Hiking Trail. It is around 500 kilometers long; just under 100 kilometers of it run through Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels, and Marktheidenfeld. The region thus also offers a point of reference for longer hikes, while the Wern Cycle Route runs directly through Thüngen.

Cultural destinations also reveal different sides of Main-Spessart. The Historic Aschfeld Church Fort is a fortified refuge dating from the 15th century. Parts of the fortifications are now used as museum spaces; the “Die gute alte Zeit zum Anfassen” collection presents old defensive weapons as well as rural life and work.

At the Homburg Paper Mill Museum, production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, the paper-making family’s living quarters, and a demonstration workshop have been fully and authentically preserved. In addition, a hand papermaking workshop there still produces fine handmade paper, now in its fifth generation. Together with the Aschfeld Church Fort, this museum visit offers a different cultural focus from the Old Town tour in Thüngen.
