Esselbach: Half-Timbered Houses, Baroque Art and a Cultural Trail
Accommodation in Esselbach
Esselbach combines Franconian architectural history with a location on an expansive high plateau in the heart of Spessart Nature Park. Historic buildings, St. Margaretha Parish Church and the “Poststraße und Milchstraße” cultural trail give the town several distinct facets. The “Die Weed” leisure facility is also a popular destination for local residents and visitors.
Half-Timbered Houses and Local History
The Esselbach rectory was built in 1617 in the typical Franconian half-timbered style. Lower Franconia’s oldest surviving post office building is also in Esselbach and dates from the second half of the 17th century. Beneath its plaster is decorative half-timbering comparable to that on the rectory. Both buildings are thus linked by their half-timbered features, though these take different forms: the post office building’s decorative half-timbering lies beneath the plaster, while the rectory was built using half-timbered construction. The rectory therefore dates from an earlier period than the post office building.
Church and Wayside Shrine
St. Margaretha Parish Church was built in 1779 in the Early Classical style. The pulpit and organ case are Baroque, date from around 1700 and come from the former collegiate monastery of Triefenstein. The building and its furnishings therefore represent different periods of origin; the furnishings are dated earlier than the church. Nearby, at Esselbach am Trieb in the direction of Baumgartshof, stands a wayside shrine dating from 1487, one of the oldest in Lower Franconia. It adds a witness from a considerably earlier period.
Cultural Trail and Leisure Facility
The 6 km “Poststraße und Milchstraße” cultural trail begins at the Weed in Esselbach and runs through Esselbach and the districts of Kredenbach and Steinmark. Check the current trail conditions before setting out. The “Die Weed” leisure facility in Esselbach is open to local residents and visitors. It offers a large playground, a beach volleyball court, table tennis tables and a bocce court. The town thus combines specific architectural-history sites with a route that takes in Esselbach and its districts.
Esselbach in the wider Main-Spessart destination
Vineyards, water and forest shape the holiday region of the wider Main-Spessart destination. Spessart Nature Park offers everything from short walks to hikes lasting several days. Archaeological cultural trails also explore the Spessart landscape and share insights into the history of Main-Spessart. Another cultural and historical landmark in the wider Main-Spessart destination is Karlstadt’s old town: founded around 1200, it preserves buildings and structures that have stood for more than seven centuries; walls, towers and gates surround the old town.
The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. By comparison, the Esselbach Cultural Trail is a much shorter 6 km local route through Esselbach, Kredenbach and Steinmark. Their different lengths and routes offer two scales for planning a trip: a trail through Esselbach and its districts, and a regional hiking trail connecting several towns in the district.
