Discover Urspringen
Accommodation in Urspringen
Urspringen offers two themes to explore when planning a trip: cultural history and cycling. The church and synagogue provide distinct historical perspectives; in addition, two cycling routes pass through Urspringen. One is around 43 kilometres long and includes climbs towards Roden, while the other follows paved agricultural roads to Birkenfeld. The wider Main-Spessart destination also offers a regional setting for hiking and culture. This gives you specific themes to consider when planning and looking for a hotel in Urspringen.
Church and synagogue: two historical highlights
The church in Urspringen was consecrated on 4 June 1856 by Georg Anton von Stahl, Bishop of WĂĽrzburg, in honour of the Virgin Mary. Mary is the patron saint of the church and the village. This makes the consecration a precisely dated event with a specific dedication in the history of the village. If you are interested in religious history, you can include the consecration as a specific historical point of reference in your travel plans.
Built in 1803, the Urspringen synagogue now serves as a memorial and permanent exhibition, “Genisa – Jewish Life in the Countryside”. It commemorates the Jewish communities of Main-Spessart district and the citizens who were deported and murdered; it also introduces visitors to Jewish culture. The site thus combines remembrance with cultural education and looks beyond Urspringen to Jewish life across the district. Check seasonal visitor information before your visit.
Cycling routes with different profiles
The approximately 43-kilometre Lohr–Marktheidenfeld–Urspringen–Lohr cycling tour passes through places including Zimmern, Roden, Urspringen, Ansbach and Waldzell. The route is flat in the Main valley, with climbs after Roden. It is therefore not flat all the way. Take the climbs after Roden into account when assessing the route, and check local route information before setting out.
The “View across the Spessart” cycling route follows paved agricultural roads through Urspringen to Birkenfeld. When comparing the two options, you can consider the approximate total distance and the different sections of the Lohr–Marktheidenfeld–Urspringen–Lohr tour alongside the roads mentioned and the course of the “View across the Spessart” route. This lets you consider distance, climbs and road surface as different aspects of planning your ride.
More to explore in the wider Main-Spessart destination
The wider Main-Spessart destination offers an additional setting for hiking and culture. The Main hiking trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. Archaeological circular cultural trails explore the Spessart landscape and offer insights into the region’s history. In Spessart Nature Park, options range from short walks to multi-day hikes.
The landscape of the wider Main-Spessart destination is also a theme in its own right: vineyards, water and forests shape the holiday region. If you would like to plan for hiking or regional history in addition to Urspringen’s cultural and cycling themes, you can consider these regional options as an additional setting. The hiking trails and landscape themes relate to Main-Spessart and are not features of Urspringen.
